106-110 Firebrace St Horsham, VIC, Australia 3400 (03) 5382 0399 Now, Mr RD and I know our mexican food and restaurants and we wanted to see what this place had to offer. The young waitress showed us to our lower level table next to the bar. She asked if we wanted to order a drink. Water would be fine. Normally we'd order wine but not this time. Leaning over the balcony from the bar giving us a lovely view of her armpits as an appetiser ... she plonked glasses on the table. There is a screen playing loud music videos and at one stage I had to go upstairs to the toilet to escape a foul mouthed rap artist.(careful, stairs are very dark and dangerous) After scanning the menu, we decided on an appetiser platter for two the Fiesta Platter($15) and the Huevos Mexicos (for big eaters) ($20). Most of the main dishes are $20. Our appetiser arrived and looked good. For some strange reason the aluminium plate the food was on kept moving and twirling all over the table as we tried to stab some food onto our forks. For some even stranger reason, the cheese had been put on first, causing it to burn and stick to the bottom of the metal plate making it mostly impossible to remove and enjoy with the nachos. The soggy nachos were ... soggy and tasteless. The tomato salsa seemed to be nothing but a couple of spoons of chopped tomatoes out of a tin can. There was nothing added ... generic brand I think by the water content. The sour cream did not seem real, like that pressurised stuff out of another tin can. We wanted taste ... couldn't find any. The potato wedges were crisp on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside and that was a nice surprise. Next dish arrives. It looks much the same as the appetiser except for the enchiladas and a little blob of rice. Burned cheese and slippery plate all over again. And no taste ... bland with a tiny teaspoon's worth of sour cream. The rice almost seemed to apologize ... it tasted like rice-a-riso. We asked the waitress for some salsa with a bit of heat in it. She returned with a small pot of tinned tomatoes with chilli powder added to it - that's an extra $2.50 by the way. We flagged her down again and after a little stomp, we asked for some jalapenos ... they should brighten things up. Poor thing looked at us with a very strange look on her face. What? Jalapenos we said ... and spelled them out for her. Note to management - Train your staff in the dishes you have to offer. After scanning the menu she found them and returned with a tiny plate of mild jalapenos ... another $2.50 thanks very much. The taco was cold and the meat stuffed in it partially defrosted and watery. To warm it up I put a portion of the enchilada on top. How sad is that. We tried to enjoy it, but we just couldn't do it. There was no taste nor depth to any dish offered. It was a matter of eat or starve. So we ate, paid the bill and vowed never to return.
