105 Blatchington Road, Hove BN3 3YG 01273 325562 Ok so I went to Wimpy – so what?! Wimpy is little changed from the places I remember from my 70s youth. Lots of plastic, strange food and a feeling that the driftwood of life washes up here. There was me, Mart, and T. We had had a couple of beers and fancied a face full of something before a few more beers. Wimpy was closer than the curry house and it seemed like a novel idea. We found a seat without trouble – there being only two other people in the place: both staff. I was delighted to find that they still serve something called a Bender in a Bun. This is basically just a hamburger roll with a frankfurter curled up inside. They manage this by someone snipping down one side of the sausage to make little slits so the thing will bend. It was all very fast-foodoid, we were served by a fellow who asked us if we wanted ‘sips’. This we translated into ‘chips’ without too much difficulty. He was the same chap who was running the till and also the same man who began sloshing a sinister mop around our feet as we tucked in. What can you say about the food? We decided that, judged against expectations, it came up to snuff – those expectations being LOW. That’s as kind as I can be. The fried onion rings turned up after we’d finished our benders in buns. The boys had cheese on theirs. But we ate them nonetheless. Pretty bloody depressing, all in all, but I suppose I’ll have to give it an OK. You asked for it – you got it!
