I know Tunbridge wells gets a lot of reviews on Restaurant Spy because the boss has connections there. But it so happened that I was going to a concert at the Trinity Theatre (Bar too small, red wine in screw-top one-person-size bottle was bloody awful!). Anyhow, I was advised, a few days before, that Wagamama had opened a new place just round the corner. I rang and asked, 'If I come in at 10.30, will you be open?' and was told yes. I was in the company of the gentleman who designed the sweepingly huge staircase in Selfridges in Manchester (I've always wanted to go in and ask, 'Do you sell fridges?). As we sat down, things were clearly winding down. The young waitress arrived quickly and took drinks orders. I asked for water and was asked 'Tap or mineral?' So, well done there. 'Have you been at the theatre?' she asked. 'Yes'. we replied. 'Sinalgongasoundamusic?' 'No' I replied, 'The Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain.' But the mental curtain had already descended. Did she care? She didn't give a pluck! Don't bother, you waiters, unless you can sustain the hypocritical cordiality all night. Anyhow, she told us where the bogs were, when last orders were, when drinking up and closing times were, and we ordered. It came quickly, was HOT!, was tasty, was probably not Japanese, but was affordable and open late. It was fine really if your expectations are not too high - which mine weren't. Only thing I objected to was beeing observed by cameras like inverted daleks here and there on the ceiling. PERRY STALSIS 2004
