The Polecat Inn in the Chilterns is one of those vast country pubs with a huge garden, a multitude of outside tables and so popular that its got an extra field out the back for parking your car when the car park is full. The visiting eating population is a combination of young white-soxxed families, Del-boys and a significant number of "senior citizens" all of whom are urged to "note their table number" before ordering their food at the bar.
We were a little crestfallen as we looked at the blackboard menu - everything seemed "just about right" but nothing really grabbed our fancy, but when the food came - what a delight! My salmon and prawn rissoles (doesn't sound nice, does it?) were tender, flaky and rich, coming with a mound of fresh crisp salad and - get this - real bona-fide massive cut "saute potatoes", crunchy and delicious. Q's pot roasted lamb was equally vast with perfectly cooked accompanying vegetables, although the sauce was a little sticky for her liking.
The service was also particularly exceptional - our food came quite quickly and our plates diligently collected when it was clear that we'd finished.
A massive thumbs up for the Polecat and thank you for restoring my faith in "blackboard pubs"!!!! M
