| I first ventured into the Bull one Sunday afternoon looking for brunch. However, was dismayed to find no breakfast approximations on the menu, especially as I'd brought my guests along. Never mind, the interior and bustle of the pub screamed "success". However, on this visit the food was awful. Substandard bangers, pisspoor bubble, strange egg concoction and other assorted "treats" and woeful service left me embarrassed and I duly paid for my guests as I'd suggested the place. I vowed not to return. However, a few months later I spied that the chef had won the "Chef and Brewer" chain chef of the year award so the next opportunity to go back was taken, this time on a Saturday evening with a friend. The vagaries of the queuing system leave a lot to be desired, you basically hover around until you spot people leaving then dash over to the table. Fortune favouring the brave here. I think this could be improved to make it fairer, after all, people arriving first should be seated first. Also, there are no pure food areas only so drinkers may not leave even though you're starving for a bite. I actually left on my third visit to go to another pub down the road. Anyhow, once seated our order was quickly taken, friend had a burger proclaimed delicious, I had lamb shank, a huge beast that I couldn't finish but that was tender enough and with lovely crisp veg and sauteed spuds. My fiancee had something fishy with scallops that was also proclaimed to be fantastic. No room for pud I'm afraid although they did look good. I think this is one of those pubs that comes into its own during winter, the open fire and log beams resonate with the village feel. Some minor tweaks and this will rise above the OK rating.
