The Green Cross Inn
Station Rd, Goudhurst, Cranbrook, Kent TN17 1HA Tel: 01580 211200
Not exactly in Goudhurst but on a terrifying corner where lorries the size of a small country come careering round ready to run you down as you sprint over the road from the overflow car park area. The Green Cross Inn is clearly quite popular as its packed car park shows, and the bland outside buildings belie the insides - a front cosy bar and a spacious dining room in the rear. The menu is exceptional too, focussing on Mediterrenean dishes with seafood a clear favourite, eliciting a series of oohs and aahhs from Q and myself. I had a real struggle settling on anything - unusually for me I wanted almost everything, but finally settled on good old standby Salmon Fishcakes and Q for the Mussel Stew. The Fishcakes were heavy on light fluffy potatoes and very light on salmon (unlike the weighty wonders at the Dorset Arms in Withyam) and the accompanying salad agreeable but not dressed. Chips for goodness sake were not real potatoes AGAIN. Mussel Stew had lots of nice mussels but were way too salty and with not enough chorizo. Desserts of Tarte Tatin and Tiramisu were enormous and quite splendid. Not a bad place to go but a few bits of attention to detail would help. M
