I don't visit Sevenoaks often, shame as its a nice town. I remember seeing a rave review of this place when it recently opened in the Courier, so thought we'd give it a wheeze. It certainly looks the part from the outside, although at first I thought it looked very empty. This was until we stepped inside. The restaurant opens up nicely at the back, to reveal a much larger seating area. There is none of the stuff you get at your average Indian: the terrible music, the awful wallpaper etc..... Instead you get a fresh modern interior, creating a nice setting. It even has exposed brickwork and laminate flooring!
We were given some poppadums, whilst we perused the menu. A slight criticism was there was no hot lime pickle, although the poppadums were supplied with Raita, mango chutney and a very pleasant tomato based dip, nothing for the 'hotheads' though. The menu is extremely impressive, possibly one of the best I have seen at an Indian Restaurant. The introduction explained the cooking methods etc.... and explained how the restaurant was aiming for a funky alternative to your average curry house. Something I particularly liked is they seperate the menu between your traditional dishes and their own modern infusions. I spotted things as rare as lobster on there, something you are unlikely to see on the average curry menu. Anyway for starter I ended up plumping for the lamb kebab served with mint and raita. This was very well presented and included a small salad. It consisted of 4 very succulent peices of lamb that were cooked in a blend of spices, the sauces a nice accompaniment. Mrs L went for the spiced potatoes with garlic mushrooms, and a hot sauce. She left the sauce as she doesn't like things too hot. She was most impressed, I tried the potato and thought it was gorgeous. For mains Mrs L went for the traditional Chicken Tikka Massala which came out a superb colour. It was interesting that the rice (mushroom in this instance) came ready served on the plate, pressed onto the plate straight from a bowl (for presentation). I forget the name of the dish I had, Goti Ghost or something similar. Nevertheless it was very nice. Lamb in a spicy sauce, and not the processed rubbish you sometimes get but proper succulent lamb, even slighty pink in the middle!! I really like a curry spicy and this was the spiciest dish I could find, I would have gone hotter, although I'm sure they can do this at request. Slightly more expensive than your average tandoori, but you pay for what you get. It appears they are opening a branch in Tunbridge Wells on the site of the old Rusty Pelican. I await this excitedly, as there is plenty more I would like to try on the menu. Approved. TheLa
