The Kentish Yeoman / Orson Welles has re-opened (just yesterday, in fact) - and although I can't speak for the quality of the food (but £28.50 for a T-Bone Steak and "Pommes Allumettes", anyone?), I'm afraid it's going to have to be REJECTED force majeure, all down to the nonsensical prices and particularly the following little ditty taken from the foot of the menu:
"10% service charge will be added to all bills, Thank you"
I really love the "Thank you".
This vile practice has now finally, inexorably and with grinding inevitability, made its way to our fair burgh.
Dear Sweet Holy Lamb of God on a Moped, this place has got me riled. "Pommes Allumettes"??! Just call them French Fries, Matchstick Fries, String Fries, or even better - how about "Chips"? How stupid do the owners think the dining-outers of Tunbridge Wells really are? £28.50 (sorry - shouldn't that actually be £31.35?) for Steak & Chips?
And just what sort person do they think will shell out £140.00 (sorry, £154.00) for a bottle of Sassicaia? ESPECIALLY when they can't even be bothered to spell the name of the blimming stuff correctly on the Wine List: it's "Tenuta San Guido", people - not "Temta". Fair enough, it's fabulous wine - albeit fabulously over-priced at the best of times - but come on, chaps. In a pub?! And one last word on this subject, the 2003 ain't even remotely ready to drink. Needs about, oooh, another 10-15 years to come into its own - so whoever does actually buy a bottle of this is just posing, plain and simple.
I think I can safely speak for all residents of - as well as regular visitors to - the Village and Grove Hill area, that we had high hopes for a decent, proper, honest, pub to rise phoenix-like from the ashes of the Yeoman / Orson. This ain't it. Truffle Pig

Very disappointed
I have been to the Black Pig once before and found it very good. However, on my second visit on Friday I was very disappointed. We booked a table for two a couple of weeks in advance. We arrived slightly early and waited for our table. When we were seated, we were not in the main restaurant, but in a seating area above the bar. We were a table for two in a small area with the only other table being a group of 13. They had just started their starters and were shouting, singing and hi-fiving. We asked to be moved and were told everyone else was seated. We were offered a complimentary portion of bread (£1.50) for having a "rubbish" table. We decided that by the time our bottle of wine came out 20 minutes later, we had, had enough and for the first time in my life I walked out of a restaurant. We did tell the waitress we were leaving, and she just walked off without saying a word. Just a word of warning be very careful to ask for the table you want when booking this restaurant, we will not be returning in a hurry.
Disappointed
I have dined at the black pig several times in the past and it has been very good. I have noticed that almost each time there was a different combination of chefs and last night was no exception.
I ordered the venison rump and chop. Now I like my venison rare but this was raw and the cut of meat was impossible to chew through and I tried really hard. In fact I don't think a german shepperd would be be able to bite through it. It was most likely cooked from frozen.
The ditsy waitress didn't ask us how the meal was going during supper and I had to complain when they cleared the plates and we paid the bill.
I am very disappointed with the black pig, clearly the chef is clueless. I can only conclude it is a lottery when you visit.
totally disagree! the black pig is fantastic!!
I am very impressed with the Black Pig pub in Tunbridge Wells. I have been there 5 times, at varied times and always had amazing food and service. They are so friendly when you book a table and totally accommodating to us with a small baby and a large buggy! Unlike the Hare in Langton Green that snub you and say you can't book a table when you say you have a child. I love the Black Pig, think its great value for the quality of the food. Perhaps the dissapointed went there in the early days and it has improved as I really don't agree with them!
the black pig
I would agree with everyone on this one!! . . . the kitchen cant cope with a busy saturday night it is to over priced and the food can be on the small side sometimes! i have no problem with the service, i went there back in april and we had a lovely blonde girl serve us, she was brillant and on the ball and always apologising for the wait and any other problems we had great service . . . shame about the food
A disappointing Black Pig
I went to The Black Pig about six weeks ago for a Sunday lunch with a girlfriend. I thought that the food was well cooked, but extremely pricey for what it was. The bill was, frankly, extortionate for what we ordered.
It is true that Tunbridge Wells is gastronomically challenged and in comparison with its local contemporaries the BP is a nice venue, but for my money, if I wanted a wonderful dining experience in Tunbridge Wells I'd choose Thackeray's without hesitation. Now that is a beautiful dining experience and worth every penny, and you don't have to que for a dirty and dingy loo like I did at the BP.
Another thing that bugs me, pubs that want to charge the same prices as the top end restaurants in London, but don't want to give you the same service as you'd get at a good restaurant! If they're going to charge a ubiquitious 10% service charge, that's what they should deliver - good service.
Oh, and one more thing... I hope to God I haven't made any spelling mistakes!
Rejected.

Black Pig Vs Thackerays
Living within a few minutes walk of the Black Pig, we have eaten there regularly and have never had any problems with the service, yes it is slightly more expensive than some other restaurants but the food has always been excellent. We have never eaten at Thackrays but will no doubt be trying it soon though £26.50 for roast sirloin + 12.5% service charge makes the Black Pig appear cheap!
Pur-lease
Comparing the Black Pig with Thackeray's is about as laughable as comparing McDonalds with Le Gavroche.

The comment made are good ones, i suppose.
So i guess you ll be off to the "All you can eat buffet" at Pizza Hut?
I hear they ve got an Ice Cream Fun Factotry too!
Black Pig
Please don't believe these reviews me and my friends had a brilliant time at the black pig with there wonderful seasonal menu. The service was friendly and the management on the ball.
As for price... well you really do get what you pay for and here, you get a really good meal in beautiful surroundings. Quiet frankly I don't think it's the restaurant that's up it's own arse but maybe your reviewer? I mean what kind of snob sits down and checks the wine on the list spelling is correct? Instead of just getting on and enjoying it.

Spelling failures
Why is it that most of those praising the Black Pig in this column are spellingly challenged? 'Quarms' is a spectacularly good one, I think. Alex is OK with the spelling but horribly vague on the details.

Black Pig spelling mistakes
Well you could be a cynic and say that Truffle Pig's first notice of a spelling mistake on the menu seems to have ushered in a whole host of one and the same by Pig lovers.
Alex has "there" instead of "their" and "quiet" instead of "quite". Perhaps she wrote "there menyou".
M
Alex's spelling as bad as all Pig lovers and Pig menu writers
Oh yes, I didn't spot those spelling howlers of Alex's; my eyes aren't what they were. Headmaster's prediction seems to have come true.

The Black Pig
Sorry you can't be arsed to do a proper review of the Black Pig... Where else do you get decent pub food in Tunbridge Wells.. so what if it's a bit pricey you get what you pay for, so no doubt you're condemned to a life time of mediocrity. I just tried to book a Friday night on a Wednesday and can't get near the place... ho hum guess the public are voting with their feet...as for moaning on about a feeble printers typo (that old m for a u and an n) PLEASE! I obviously need to go elsewhere for a decent review rather than read a load of tight fisted b******s.

The Black Pig, Tunbridge Wells
Have to agree with the first report here. We were so looking forward to this place opening, after hearing it has links with the superb George & Dragon in Speldhurst. We tried it a month or so after it first opened. The sadly lacking and overpriced 'Sunday Roast' was actually served with chips hidden under a limp overcooked piece of roast beef and a VERY small dish of veg on the side. A chef that serves chips with a roast dinner has clearly no respect for the food they are dishing out or for their customers. The waitress looked embarrassed to be serving it. And it doesn’t sound as though things have improved, judging by the lack of custom. We are not exactly spoilt for choice when it comes to quality food in the pubs in town but we are not fools. Rejected. kbhr
The Black Pig
Been here a couple of times but last night was really disappointing. Food was quite good but the service was sloppy, the toilets were dirty (no lock on the door either) and the place was pretty chaotic. But what really annoys me is the price - I just feel as though I was ripped off. The food wasn't THAT good so as to merit the very large bill and I resent being expected to pay for having bread with my meal. Also the wine is pretty rough for the prices they charge. It's a shame as the place is really nice and it could be great. I fear this is going to fall into the usual trap of making an early success, getting too comfortable and taking customers for granted and going rapidly downhill. Shame. Ali
The Black Pig, Tunbridge Wells
I was really looking forward to eating at the Black Pig and on entering I wasn’t disappointed. The decor was great and it was busy without being too crowded as you could still reach the bar. We took our seats in the dining area and filled the last remaining table, good job we booked! We were given menus and the choices looked good, accommodating vegetarians.
From here on in it went downhill. It took over 20 mins for anyone to take our order by which time one of our group had returned to the bar to order more drinks. After waiting over an hour! Our starters arrived. My soup was good but some ordered the smoked salmon and the portion size bordered on the ridiculous. £6 for a postage stamp size amount of salmon is just daylight robbery. The house red is the worst I have ever tasted and a wait of over 20 mins for more drinks to arrive is excessive. When the mains arrived (over one and a half hours after ordering) I was some what disappointed. My sea bream was cold, the steak looked small and undercooked and once again the portion size was on the small side. We passed on desert and we had to be back for the sitter at midnight! Certainly not worth the price. The service was polite but VERY slow and I am not sure the kitchen can cope on a busy Saturday night. Avoid and go elsewhere. Rejected. Bill007.
Follow M around Tunbridge Wells & - everything she says is bad!
Just trying to choose a restaurant & having looked through all the listings if you take m's advice you'd better go to a Supermarket cafe instead.
However good on you Black Pig , i've eaten at the Black Pig and have no quarms about it. DianeB
The Black Pig
Had lunch there last week with m'lady. Wonderful welcome, excellent food well served, couple of pints of Harveys, very good value.
Strongly recommended.

The Black Pig
Havevbeen to the black pig several times and have enjoyed it each time. The seasonal menu changes twice daily and the locally sourced food are just some of the reasons we keep going back. Having been fans of the George and Dragon, it is great to get the same quality food within Tunbridge Wells. Food prices are reasonable considering the quality of the ingredients and standard of the food. Atmosphere is relaxed and the service fantastic.
The Pig and The Dragon
I've been surprised to read on here that the Black Pig has connections with the George and Dragon in Speldhurst, but even more surprised by people praising the latter. My wife and I went there for a midweek evening meal (Winter 07/08) and had possibly the worst meal to which we've ever been subjected. The food was expensive but extremely ordinary, and the service was truly diabolical. We repeatedly had to go to the bar to ask for our order to be taken, to ask where our food was, to ask for the bill. Having finally ordered, we'd actually finished our bottle of wine before the drab starters arrived. The only place remotely as poor as this that I can think of is the abominable Swan in Lamberhurst.
As for the Pig, I side totally with the 'good' camp. Having toned down the ludicrous prices they charged when they opened (£7 for soup and £27 for a steak, anyone?) we enjoyed excellent food, good wine and perfectly adequate service, again on a mid-week evening (Spring 08). It struck me as great value, and as alluded elsewhere on this page, where else can you eat well in a pub in TW? Highly recommended.
