Before making our way to the freshly open ‘Nobles Restaurant’ in the High Street, Battle (opened 1st July 07) we took a peek at the website www.noblesrestaurant.co.uk. The promise of fresh seasonal produce left us salivating at the thought of rustic earthy flavours.

On arriving at the restaurant, the décor was simple, warm and welcoming, there was a healthy aura of happy relaxation and the customers who were all varying in age, seemed to be enjoying themselves. Service was impeccable, friendly but professional, coats were elegantly taken and we were seated. The menu was simple with variation to appeal to all tastes, there was no fancy speak, nothing you had to question, it was all there in black and white and in plain English. We ordered the house white, which was a 2006 VEGA DEL CASTILLO, Navarra, Spain and was very pleasantly light and fresh with a hint of fruit and accompanied our meal well. We were given a couple of slices of homemade bread with butter (the butter, unfortunately straight from the fridge and our table had been forgotten regarding side plates for the bread).

I went for the soup starter which was broccoli and stilton, tasted fresh and left room for you to add condiments to your taste, W had the grapefruit, avocado and parma ham salad, which looked great and apparently tasted just as good, with a freshly made dressing. For main I ordered the gressingham duck which came with wilted baby spinach, raspberry vinaigrette and what was referred to as a crispy potato bake (from memory) but basically a potato rosti very well done. Unfortunately when I tasted it, it seemed a little over crispy and possibly not the best companion for the duck. W had the mixed fish grill, which consisted of a piece of salmon fillet, a solitary king prawn, a small amount of squid amongst others. Unfortunately he wasn’t too impressed with this dish as the fish seemed to be swimming in a fair amount of oil and for the money (around £15.00) there wasn’t really very much fish and there wasn’t enough flavour to compensate on the price. So the main courses we had chosen left us feeling a little unimpressed considering the costs to the customer.

Although we did not sample their signature dish, we overheard throughout our meal a couple of people comment on their wonderful steak.

Desert was much more agreeable, I opted for the cherry parfait, you could taste the fresh double cream and cherry but it wasn’t too heavy and tasted freshly made, and I enjoyed this, while W went for the sticky toffee pudding which he enjoyed, although felt it was little different from other sticky toffee puddings he had tasted.

All in all we felt that the prices particularly for the main courses that we had were high but, having said that, it is a new restaurant, the staff are buzzing and racing from table to table constantly providing an A1 service, the meals arrived promptly and the wine was lovely. Around £72.00 for the both of us including service and I think for this money a little more tweaking would not go amiss. Jeeves and Wooster
