We ate here twice, because we were so hungry the first time we ordered very quickly, and did not look at the whole menu. While enjoying our starter of sottolio, (olives, mushrooms, artichokes and sundried tomatoes in olive oil) we saw all this lovely looking fried fish and deep fried courgette flowers stuffed with cream cheese on their way to other tables. Bugger. But our pizzas were first class - and of course Madam has to have the Tiramisu, doesn't she? "well this is the home of Tiramisu, isn't it?" Yes, and it was fine, but honestly no better than the average London version. L's dessert was simply described as "cream tart" and it was much nicer, rich with pistachios. We went back 3 days later and had the fried fish, the deep fried courgette flowers stuffed with cream cheese and listen, if you ever meet anyone who can make this dish, don't hang about, propose immediately. Shared an aubergine pizza and tuna and bean salad, lemon sorbet, all divine. Speaking of which - on the way to alle Carrette our path was blocked by hundreds of chanting religious folk, assorted monks, nuns, civilians and children - and amidst the throng a kind of huge, wobbly sedan chair in which perched Il Papa himself. Were pleased to note the crowd heading away from our destination, because although it's a big restaurant, they'd never have squeezed the entire retinue in. "No good" said L, "we can't fight out way through nuns, let's find somewhere else" But not even His Holiness is going to get between me and my dinner, so I said "Follow me" stuck my elbows out and "excused me'd" across the shuffling throng.
