I visited this establishment on Friday 9 May 2008. Famed for it's location right on the seafront, with views from Worthing down towards Brighton Marina. This was a balmy Sussex evening and the London crowd was out in force.
The first shock was how quiet the downstairs bar was, compared to the bustle of the other bars. On reflection it may have been down to the lack of bar staff! We went up the stone staircase to the upstairs restaurant. This looked fabulous with floor to ceiling windows, offering superb views and light wood tables with modern but calming fixtures. We asked a gentleman for a table, but this was ignored. Eventually after feeling like the invisibles we were led to a window table and settled down.
The menu was seasonal but not inspiring, but we opted to start with two portions of garlic bread. I had a glass of a rather delicious Rose, whilst one friend had a Pimms and the other an Italian Lager. We all went for the steak linguine, but my request for rare steak was shrugged of as not possible! The garlic bread arrived and looked suspiciously like something you might have picked up at a local supermarket, on tasting the blandness confirmed it probably was. The waiter twice brought up food for other tables and the service wasn't slow it was non existent. The main course finally arrived and my friend asked again for her lager which hadn't appeared. The black pepper mill was plonked on the table and no parmesan appeared. At no time was we asked if we were alright and we were still waiting on the lager. The food was covered in oil, the pasta was over cooked as was the steak, which was extremely chewy. I eventually stopped a waiter to ask about the lager which had been sitting on the counter since we started the meal and had no chance of being the chilled drink requested. I also asked to speak to the manager. The lager arrived from the counter, warm. The manager walked passed our table four times before stopping. I spoke to him about the appalling service, which he agreed with and made a comment, 'If you can find staff to do this' before striding off! I can't believe how stressed the staff were as the restaurant was only half full! We decided enough was enough and rather then wait, went to the till to pay. I again complained about the service and they agreed to give 10% of the £66.00 bill. But this turned into £3.00 discount. By now our evening was in ruins so we decided to cut and run. Eventually we received the £6.00 refund . We left vowing never to return, so I am warning your readers to continue towards the Palace Pier where there are just a few better quality establishments.
