Yellow River, Riverside Level, The Oracle, Reading, RG1 2AGRiverside Level, The Oracle, Reading, RG1 2AG 0118 956 7009 Whilst looking pretty standard and not screaming out to you ‘This is a great place to eat!’, don’t be fooled! The restaurant is a little dimly lit but has a lot of character with oriental paintings and adverts adorning the walls, giving it a pleasant feel. The kitchen is in the restaurant, not hidden behind doors, so you can see that the food is freshly prepared, and the enticing aromas and occasional flames, ensure that you know that microwaves are NOT part of their style! The décor and surroundings however are unimportant, and it wouldn’t matter how the place was decorated. The reason? The food and the service! I was served by May, who aside from being very attractive, is efficient, friendly, and an ideal hostess. The menu has a wide range of Indonesian, Thai, Chinese and Malaysian food, with many choices which will have you hungrier than you were coming in. And a wine list to match. The food is selected by none other than the estimable Ken Hom, who has even matched wines to suggested menus to help you out if you’re not sure what to drink with your food. You have a superb choice of set menus, buffet, or a la carte. The Yellow River mixed platter starter is very good, even if the Satay chicken was not quite to my palate. Other diners were licking their lips and enjoying the same with relish! The Spring roll is light, crisp and flavourful, not usually a food I’m too keen on, but these are VERY good. The Pakora is light, NOT oily and exceptional! And the ribs were the meatiest I’ve had in ANY restaurant… The Shanghai style duck is excellent! Moist, and tender, and full of flavour. The Singapore noodles are not too spicy and not oily either. The Nasi Goreng with seafood are some of the best I’ve had. FULL of meat. The cooks certainly don’t skimp on the king prawn. I passed on dessert as the portions are anything but skimpy and I’d only intended a light lunch. However the Jasmine tea was not to be missed. Light and fragrant, not at all bitter, it was fantastic. The bill was very reasonable and all-in-all, this is yet another great place for eating in Reading. They even have the facility to fax food orders thru, or even via the website which has a complete menu.
