Alfresco is situated on Northgate Street which is very much part of Chester’s Roman character. It is one of those café restaurants when, as you walk by, the strangely appealing sound of clattering plates and high pitch steam and whirls of cappuccino machines draws you inside. It has a friendly atmosphere where the waitresses are all smiling and helpful despite the frantic rush to get the people served. The menu covers a wide range of freshly prepared food and their speciality baguettes with delicious fillings are enough to make this the main meal of the day. They do not hold back with the ingredients and the Italian chicken was generously laden with creamy mayonnaise, tomatoes and thick cuts of spiced chicken breast. The Peking duck was sweet and tender as it lay between a lightly toasted panini. Both meals served with a deliciously dressed salad and the cappuccinos were almost authentically Italian. Overall it is a great place to have lunch and at a reasonable price where you can get change from £10 after a meal for two. It is good quality but if you like a more quiet and relaxing place to eat then maybe it is not for you. Chris Hammer
