It's that time of year when - if the flights are cheap enough - some people head to New York for the shopping. But what do you do when you have finished taking advantage of the plunging dollar? Head for PJ Clarkes and take advantage of the food. It is a fine bit of old New York, with a great menu and good service. You wouldn't be alone in heading here after a long day, it was a favourite of Frank Sinatra, and one of his songs was written at the bar. Go in through the old doorway, past the bar on one side and the oyster bar on the other and head down to the back. You can't book but it's fun waiting for the table to become free, you can watch the locals and have a drink in the small bar. In the restuarant the bare brick walls take you back to earlier, more simply designed restaurants. The chalkboard menu is full and has a wide enough variety for any taste. You must try the mini-hamburgers (as a starter) and at least one of your party must have the fish and chips, which is the best in the US. It is good value and good fun, and one of the most memorable places to eat in New York. Head to the upper east side, and enjoy! fellow Traveller
