Oh dear. Well, OK, you’re staying at Crossroads so you don’t expect table d’haute. But when you order a Full English Breakfast you’d like it to appear as if it was cooked today, not yesterday. Travel Inn is a Whitbread brand so this should tip you off about what to expect. We only had breakfast there and had pre-ordered two ‘Traditional’ breakfasts and one boiled egg and soldiers. The latter took so long to arrive that , by the time it turned up, J had practically grown up, gone to university, got married, had children of his own and died of old age . Bless ’em, they cancelled his bill. The Full English Breakfast is always a bit of a gamble and this one was ‘Traditional’ in the usual sense: sinister looking egg (cold and rubberoid – but no snot on top, thank the Lord), indestructible bacon, a mechanically recovered type sausage (Ugh!), and cold toast that exploded in the mouth like a sheet of glass. Tea was from bags and fruit juice from some fruit juice factory. I noticed grapefruit segments leering at me but didn’t dare. Then there’s this thing with individual cartons of butter, jam, sugar etc. Quite apart from the environmental havoc these wreak, they are aesthetically repulsive. It’s all done for the convenience and cost saving of the business; the customer comes last. Travel Inn: sort your breakfasts out; they’re not good enough. REJECTED. PERRY STALSIS 2002.
