Just off the A30 at Goss Moor lies the best excuse I know of (if your're not a surfer) to go to Newquay. Over the last few years Mrs Wildfrank and I along with my two entrancing daughters have whizzed past a brown sign on the motorway saying 'Port and Starboard Fish and Chips' and have never even thought about popping in, until a shortbreak holiday brought us past that sign one more time.

As soon as we walked in we were welcomed by a wonderful lady from Lancashire who made us feel totally at ease and escorted us to a table whilst the wildfrank nostrils were alerted to the wonderful smells emanating from the kitchen. The girls were given complimentary lucky bags whilst Mrs Wildfrank and I perused the menu. Eldest daughter and I had the set meal of Cod, Chips, choice of Mushy Peas or Baked Beans, slice of bread, mug of tea/coffee or soft drink. Youngest daughter had 'Cod Bites' chips and soft drink, Mrs Wildfrank had Scampi and Chips. Drinks were delivered Iced, sliced and lovely. Wonderful Lancashire Lady asked us if we wanted any comestibles with our order?, Tomato Sauce, Mayo, Home made Tarter Sauce...Home Made? oh yes indeed we did! The food arrived...now let me digress here.... I regard Fish and Chips as one of the simplest food combinations to do well and so it continually annoys me to see up and down the country restaurants selling crap fish and chips! ...from lousy batter to over cooked fish to always undercooked chips which have been boiled rather than deep fried in horrible oils that are well past their sell-by date and taint everything that is fried in them. Rant over because here was what I had been looking for...The fish cooked in a melt in your mouth batter that was almost tempura like in its quality, the fish was...I can only say Perfect, because it was just that, a piece of cod that was fresh, sweet and absolutely spot on. The chips (from I understand a local supplier) skin on, not too thick and perfectly cooked, not greasy and, just like the fish, cooked in Beef Dripping, the ONLY way to cook Fish and Chips, anything else is just mucking about (although they did admit to having seperate arrangements for our vegetarian friends) Have I mentioned the home made tartare sauce? perfect! Mrs Wildfranks Scampi were many and like the cod, cooked perfectly, youngest daughters 'Cod Bites' were two pieces of fish, either which would have been plenty, again with the perfect chips and a natty little salad garnish. What else can I say but that the Wildfrank Brood were locust-like and cleaned their plates. The staff were terrific ( I understand that the new owners have been esconced there since last October, and have already won an award for the restaurant not surprising at all) Go out of your way to get to this eatery if you want to taste proper fish and chips, I certainly will ! and if I can find a better word than perfect I'll use it straight away! Wildfrank
