These Meaderies seem very popular down Penzance way and are basically restaurants which sell Cornish Mead as well, which is something that needs to be experienced - and respected. Newlyn Meadery is my favourite. It used to be a cinema but was converted to a restaurant in 1974. It is now a cavernous eating place with stained glass at one end, pillars and coats of arms galore and serving wenches in period costume. For some strange reason though, maybe because it's Cornwall, it does not seem naff or like some piece of corporate hospitality and it's easy to join in with the spirit of the thing. At the same time there is no forced jollity either. It is genuinely child-friendly, but the kids are so knocked out by the colour and spectacle that none that I saw had time to behave badly. Child's portions of everything are available. Food is pretty basic but good - starters around £3.50 and mains around £7 - and best of all, especially for the kids, you eat it with your hands off wooden boards! Yes, it happened here first, long before McDonalds invaded. A very good inexpensive night out for all the family. It's wise to book, especially in summer. Don't forget to pick up some fruity mead on the way out - olde tyme alcopops but altogether better and some might say more lethal. Harry
