If you love Seafood, particularly shellfish, and you also love the fact that you have just seen a crate of what you are about to eat being carried in from the sea. Cookies Crab Shop is definitely the place to go. Good simple shellfish salads and platters freshly prepared and at bargain prices. BYO alcohol. Lovely to sit outside in the sea air consuming your fruits de mer. Hans

We ate here last week -

We ate here last week - thought we were the only people sitting down to eat at lunch time, the russian? lady told us to eat at the small table :) We found the lack of service and many rules amusing, and no doubt we will joke whenever we go anywhere new about having to sit at the 'shmall' table! It reminded us of trying to get a table at a french resteraunt once and being given a very gallic shrug and told we would have to wait 1 hour, 2 hours - who knows... this still amuses us!

The fish part of both our lunches was very good, though a microwave baked potato is always a disappointment.

Just enjoy the food and try to see the funny side of the brusqueness...

Seafood

What a fantastic place. Good efficient service at 2:15pm with crab and lobster that tasted as if it had just been caught and cooked. A feast for the eyes as well as the mouth: a royal salad if ever there was one.

Oct 2009

WOW! What an experience. If

WOW! What an experience. If you like seafood with beetroot, this is the place to go. The ambience of the garden shed leaves a lot to be desired and your name and timeslot is on the wall just in case you decide to over-stay, plenty of flies too. The girl who served our table did not acknowledge us and the
the "Royale Salad" was anything but.
One thing it did, was to give us an experience to talk about for years to come. So for seafood with the Eastern European touch, visit "Cookies". For delicious seafood, lobster and crab, visit Cromer.

cookies???

a terrible experience of bad service and seafood that you could have prepared yourself at home. asked for a seafood platter and told in broken english that the seafod platter was a salad???? cockles, prawns, smoked mackerel, anchovies all tasted like they had come from a supermarket and probably the worst crab i had ever had the mispleasure of tasting. all served in a garden shed!! get down to cromer to get the freshest crab. jon and tracey mcmillan.

I use to work at Cookies

It's so funny to read all these comments. Nothing has change since I worked there. And it's been two years...Please don't be mad at the staff - it's all because of the stupid rules - the lady boss made. But I recomend you go there -you will have something to talk about - where else you gonna experiens something like that? Just be cool about it, the only think you can be sure is that the food is always fresh! Vege and fish come every morning, in the summer even twice a day. And you know how old people are - kind of crazy - the lady boss is kind of crazy...

The seafood platters here

The seafood platters here may be OK but the customer service is the worst I have ever come across. The rudeness to my 80 year old parents was inexcusable and we will NEVER return. Try across the road - a great welcome and wonderful food.

Cookies

We've just returned from a few days in Cley and visited Cookies several times, I have to say the customer service (and the seafood) were superb and could not be faulted.

What happened to customer service?

The quality of the food and its value are not in question at Cookies, likewise the location. However, customer service is dreadful and on our most recent visit, my daughter was reduced to tears by the owner's rude manner. Apparently such poor treatment of a customer is not an isolated incident - ask the locals!

Cookies - unique and wonderful

If you enjoy spanking fresh seafood, beautifully presented in a charming retro style and at a very reasonable cost, eating outdoors in the fresh Norfolk air and being able to bring your own wine, you will understand why locals as well as visitors eat regularly at Cookies. That the proprietors are somewhat characterful is part of its unique charm. If you accept the constraints they operate under (a tiny kitchen, the need to work like crazy all summer in order to pay their bills in winter) and are a bit flexible and respect the system that make their very low prices possible, you will be treated like family and enjoy one of the most memorable seafood experiences in England. If you are a rude and boorish townie who expects to have every whim indulged just because you have pulled up in a posh car, you will find that's not how things work in Norfolk.

So rude we left

The worse service I have ever had. This place is clearly making so much money they feel they can treat customers with complete disdain. It was a quiet afternoon - lots of free tables etc. Yet their RULES were still enforced. The 1 person out of our group of 6 who did not want a main meal was told she could not sit at the table unless she ordered food but was refused a sandwich (they're take away only) or pate and toast (no starters in the afternoon). So we went over the road to the pub for delicious crab and hospitable service.

Review

We have eaten at Cookies several times always enjoyed it - the food is delicious - it is not a upmarket venue - but excellent food at excellent prices - looking forward to my Norfolk trip soon as Cookies is on the agenda (at least once)

I ate there with 4 friends

I ate there with 4 friends on 22/03/2009. The staff member we encountered (a young lady from eastern Europe) was rude, it was like she was doing us a favour to be able to eat there. Even though there was only one other table being used. Food was OK, nothing special, wouldn't rush back. Would prefer somewhere with better service.

Cookies at Salthouse

Thats realy sad as we eat there once a month all year round and we send guest there from both our B & B and self catering cottages and have never ever had a negative feed back - please try again.
May be you just caught a bad day we all have them esp. you girls!!!!

Time of the Month ?

What? I can't believe you said that! Was it meant to be a joke? Because it isn't. This is a joke:

Did you hear about Gandhi, whose feet were so hard from walking barefoot, and whose habit of fasting left him very thin and with bad breath?

So he was a super-calloused, fragile mystic, vexed with halitosis !

Now that, my friend, is a joke. You're an amateur, mate.

that my friend

Actually that was a childish racist insult against a respected religious icon. You are the joke!

expectations

fantastic food at fantastic prices if you want top service go to establishments that will charge you 5 times as much. have eaten at cookies over 10 times - never encountered rudeness or poor service - this place is a fish shop tht happens to let you sit down to eat very very good food. if you rate yourself as a bit of a foody - stay at home with your jamie oliver books.

You really need to go there

You really need to go there again. We have eaten there many many times and have never encountered poor service, even when they are rushed off their feet (weekends). The prices are so cheap for what you get and I challenge to find better elsewhere.

Cookies Crab Shop...WOW

Ate at Cookies Sunday 14/09/2008 brilliant food, excellent service prices that that are so reasonable, could not be much better, well perhaps a bottle of wine so if you are going they don`t mind if you take your own, will be back again for the lobster perhaps.

I cant believe you didn't stay for the meal Jan!
The woman at Cookies tends to be rather abrupt, but dont let her put you off. The guy there is fabulous and the food is worth it! And as for prices... Its the cheapest and best seafood I have ever tasted and I have travelled to hundreds of countries and tried fresh seafood in many coastal towns. Cookies will always be top for me!
Do yourself a favour and go back and be more open minded. Remember that they are not officially a restaurant and thats why you are able to take your own wine or beer. Take a bottle, or maybe you might need two :) and just chill out there with the papers. Book a seat but if its gone, be impressed with the fact that the demand for it is so high and that so many people want to be there.

If you dont go back though, more chance for us who do like it to get a place on the busy times ;)

Cookies Crab Shop, Holt, Norfolk

Old style sea-food shop/restaurant, always good, straight from the sea to your plate (well nearly) really fresh & very reasonably priced. Sit outside watch the world go by while enjoying fantastic food. Love the salads & also has Samphire in season. Can't fault it. bodge2nd

Having being recommended

Having being recommended this little eating place I booked lunch but was bitterly disappointed when on arriving the table had not been booked, the staff were most unhelpful and when I complained I was told 'I would be LUCKY to be able to eat there. The waitress who had taken my booking said that I should learn to read as my name was not clearly marked on a table.......... I never even got to taste any of the delicacies offered and obviously will not be returning to what is basically a shed turning out over priced fish and who are clearly out of their depth when it comes to any sort of customer care. We may be 'country folk' in Norfolk but good manners, courtesy and a reliable booking service do not cost any extra

Cookies Crab Shop

We went to Cookies Crab shop for my mum's birthday treat, we had not been before but had heard it had great seafood [this website being one of the main places I looked at before going!]. As advised we rang up a head and ordered the dishes we wanted to avoid disappointment. When we got there two of the three meals we had ordered were wrong, we politely pointed this out to the older woman waitress who was very rude and offensive and said as she had placed the plates on the table we were now stuck with it and she as good as told my mum she was a liar when she stated what she had ordered - I don't think I have ever been served by such a utterly rude and disagreeable person in my life and they really should work on their customer relations at Cookies - or sack her! We very nearly left but decided to make the best of it as we had so been looking forward to it.

BUT the seafood was super and very good value, the only thing I could fault with the food was the use of supermarket type pre-sliced bread which seemed a shame, some slices of a local bakers bread would have so much more befitted the standard of the fish.

Never heard so much drivel in some time, The staff in 'Cookies' are VERY polite and welcoming..still..at least you wont go going there again so there is one positive about your comment.

IS THIS THE SAME PLACE ????

Just read 'HAVING BEEN RECOMMENDED' i can't believe this is the same place that i regularly eat myself ?? Never had any problem at all (perhaps its because i use it mid-week) what a shame because if you do get to eat there !! it is really good simple fresh seafood & as for over priced try Padstow !!!!

AMAZING PLACE!

After reading the comments left I was compelled to register to add my own. We came across Cookies accidentally while on our annual holiday to Norfolk and have made a beeline for it ever since. You MUST book in advance if you are visiting in the summer as this place is sooo popular and we often witness disappointed faces leaving. The food is fabulous, amazingly priced, and simple. Never, never could you call this over priced!

Cookies

I am writing from New Zealand and I have just had a call from someone we took to Cookies whilst we were in UK who wanted their number to take some of their friends. This restaraunt is now Internationally known !! It is a fabulous place to go if you like the best seafood, the helpings are big and the staff, when we were there were young people from Eastern Europe (we think) who were very friendly and helpful. It is a place we will definitely make for next time we come back to Norfolk. Rita
