(1) My husband and I made the mistake of ignoring a critical review of Sonny's in Nottingham city centre on this website. So many people who had lived in the city quoted it as the best restaurant in town, we decided to give it a try. First impressions were good. The dining room is attractive and our waiter was friendly. However, I picked a main course described as "salmon, scallops..." because I love scallops.... and I was sorely disappointed. The so-called scallops part of the dish consisted of perhaps two-thirds of a scallop, diced and overcooked, and dotted around the edge of the plate. When I mentioned to the largish man who appeared to be head waiter that the menu was perhaps misleading on this point he explained that the "scallops" part was only meant to be a garnish and if the dish had been described as "salmon, spinach" there would not have been a lot of spinach. Silly me. I presume if there are any dishes served with asparagus at Sonny's you can expect one stem chopped into bits on your plate. While I am not an expert, I felt my salmon was undercooked and either way pretty tasteless. My husband's main course was better, but his pigeon starter was overcooked and not a pleasure to eat. These days I suspect to regard Sonny's as Nottingham's best restaurant is an insult to Nottingham. smiles

(2) Six of us went for an important celebration dinner to one of Nottingham's premier spots. After writing a glowing report previously, we are sorry to say that Sonny's has totally lost it's way. Essentially it is now no more than an expensive Cafe Rouge. They produced exceptionally mediocre starters. We then waited a good 30 minutes to have only 1/2 of the main meals delivered and were offered an apologetic explanation that the Head Waiter had dropped the Rack of Beef while removing it from the oven! Why on earth were they in the Kitchen doing the work of the chef?! They asked if we all wanted to eat together or if the 2 people would wait while they recooked the beef. We said that we all wished to eat together and that they should replace all the meals together once they had cooked the Beef. We emphasised that we did not want our meals to be the ones they presented the first time as by the time they returned to the table they would not be fresh etc. Needless to say we think they did give us the same meals. Very very dissappointing, embarrassing and we wished we had gone to Harts. dave and dolly bird
