Don't you hate these bloody dreaded chain places, butchering their way across the country's High Streets? I do, but wait, at Prezzo the food's good, fresh, hot, comes in the right order at the right time, service is polite, unobtrusive and the salads come with a huge jug of dressing!!!

Everything was so excellent and spot on that my only criticism was that the menu was a bit chicken-heavy. Never mind, I had the pesto burger - a mountain of hand-formed ace quality meat, Q had pasta with crayfish - al dente, tasty and a just right size.

A lovely sunny day in Tunbridge Wells and we were tempted by the long open windows over looking the street and modern crisp clean look of Prezzo. We entered the restaurant and waited to be seated. The waitress greeted us and I asked if it was possible to sit at the empty table near the window. She didn't answer me but quickly reeled off the specials of the day before leading us to the desired table by the window. A menu was given to us and we ordered our drinks and chose our food. The menu choices are interesting and above average for your standard chain type restuarant, we both decided on rissoto, mine off the menu my boyfriends off the special board. We sat chatting and drinking our drinks which had come quickly and the ambiance of the restaurant was very nice and relaxed. I visited the toilets which were clean and had soap (often a small detail overlooked by places all too often these days). On returning from the toilet you have to pass the kitchen,a faint whiff of cigarette smoke came from this direction which wasn't too reassuring. The meal took a while to arrive but we were happy and relaxed enough sitting chatting so this was no problem. When the meal did arrive we tucked into our well presented risottos only to find that both our dishes were cold in the middle and the seafood in my boyfriends was stone cold right through. We called the waiter and mentioned this and the plates were taken back to the kitchen. The man dressed as the manager talked to our waiter and then looked over throwing us a disapproving look. A few minutes later our plates re-emerged and the person we presumed to be the manager brought them to our table. He set them down with a sulky manner and did not speak, no apology, not a word....it felt as if we had misbehaved for wanting a properly cooked, even heated meal! When we had finished our waiter came back over to the table and we thought he was going to ask if everything ws ok but instead he picked up the salad oil bottle from our table and carried it over to another customer, once again he did not speak or ask if we had in fact finished with this. He then came and cleared our table and then reappeared with a dessert menu, all without so much as a mutter. We refused the dessert menus and asked for the bill to which he gave a resigned smile as if to acknowledge that he was not surprised. All in all the experience left me annoyed that I had wasted my day off work and my money on such a poor experience of eating out. We won't be returning as the crisp modern decor and nice surroundings mean little when your food is served with attitude ( which I don't remember ordering.) NEP72
