The Rose Revived Inn, Newbridge Witney Oxfordshire OX29 7QDNewbridge Witney Oxfordshire OX29 7QD 01865 300221 The Rose Revived is a handsome and ancient hostelry next to one of the oldest bridges on the Thames. We decided to stop there despite its breaking a number of my rules: It's on the main road; it has big blackboards with fake-chalk writing, advertising food. What persuaded us was the beautiful hanging baskets, clearly well looked after. But we should have had more sense. Those flower baskets were the only good thing about this place - I'll bet their care is sub-contracted to some flower company. The place reeked of catering fat, the rear of the pub, next to the huge car park was full of overflowing blue skips, inside, walls had been knocked out to produce a hideous airport-style space with a sticky floor, and the service was from a surly and dim girl who chatted to her feckless-looking boyfriend as she grudgingly pulled a short pint with dirty fingers. Outside, a series of wasp-blown and ketchup-smeared picnic tables were covered in leftover plates and glasses. The window sills were black with grime and the lavatories aggressively malodorous. The message: NOBODY GIVES A DAMN. Sorry, but this is just not good enough. Rejected with knobs on! Perry Stalsis. 2004

Rose Revived at Newbridge, restaurant
This establishment was flooded out during the summer of 2007 and was closed for many months for a "refit". Visiting there for the first time since it re-opened was rather an eye opener. My wife chose the Ruddocks steak pie which was presented on the plate as a slice from a large pie, one assumes that it had not been ordered for some time as one side was stale and dry. The rest of the meat which was tried was very chewy and not recommended. I normally go for fish and was invited by the menu to ask for our "fish of the day", this turned out to be salmon en croute, hardly what you expect, however as the rest of the limited menu did not appeal I went for this. Big mistake, the pastry was burnt and overcooked resulting in the couple of forkfulls of fish inside being totally overcooked and dry. The wine was nice and served well chilled, however we will only venture back if we are just looking for drinks, certainly not for the food.
