I was driving up the A350 being tailgated by a thirty ton tanker who thoght he was auditioning for Speilberg's 'Duel'. Having played cat and mouse with him for quite long enough I pulled into the carpark of a convenient pub to let him put a good half hour between us. I then realised that the pub, despite being bang on the A350, looked rather nice. It was the Somerset Arms. It has a very welcoming beer garden round the back, where the carpark is, but unfortunately it was raining. I went in for a quick one and saw that they did meals, so it turned into a very welcome slow one. I arrived at 6.20 and they didn't start serving food till 6.30 so I waited, drank, and bang on 6.30 asked for chicken with fetta cheese and spinach. No ordinary roadside pub menu, this. As I was clearly the first to order I expected it to either arrive in five minutes, whipped out of its packet and microwaved to death or to take at least an hour. Happily, neither. It arrived in about 25 minutes along with vegetable accompaniments, properly cooked and absolutely delicious. Service was A1. The pub itself is full of character and characters - I'm not sure how old it is but it certainly isn't new - and it's divided into a pub section and a restaurant section which has a big old stove as a centrepiece. Almost worth braving the A350 for. I think they're building a bypass. Watch out for large tankers. Approved Harry
