Al Fresco is a bright breezy traditional Italian brasserie in the culinary wasteland of Whetstone. It is obviously a popular destination however as the rather modest frontage leads to a cavernous dining room at the back. The smells and unmistakeable aroma of Northern Italy greets you as you walk through the front door and service is, at turns, charming and disinterested, just like back home in Italy.

We thoroughly enjoyed the food here and would strongly recommend the Spiedino - a vast selection of "spiced cooked meats" although most of the other diners seemed thrilled with the absolutely huge platters of pasta and pizza on offer. We couldn't manage anything more and a refreshing espresso - yes, done Italian style - sent us home with a buzz. A great one for the kids and fantastic value. M

Al Fresco

I'm glad I'm not the only person who thinks the food has gone down hill at this restaurant. For somewhere that is always so busy, it makes me wonder what people actually rate as good food!
The staff were rude from the minute we got there to the time we left.
Myself and my boyfriend each ordered fish, the bream turned up about 10 minutes before my seabass and was watery - definitely frozen, not fresh. We asked if they could make a fresh piece of fish, but all they seemed to do was put more tomatoes, olives and capers on top to disguise that it was in fact the same piece of fish, probably zapped in the microwave. We sent it back. The seabass was cold, tasteless and also soggy, so that was also sent back. All we salvaged from the meal was a few potatoes (which were hard in the middle), picked at the vegetables which were overcooked and soggy, and a bottle of wine!
Definitely not on the list of restaurants to return to....

Alfresco whetstone restaurant

Myself and my husband originally booked a table in the restaurant and not in the conservatory when we arrived we had to wait 25 minutes before we were seated and when asked for the table we booked the Manager was extremely rude to us so we sat in the conservatory with the doors open inhailing secondary smoke from the smokers outside the restaurant. When we mentioned this to the waiter he just shrugged his shoulders. Found it also very difficult to get the waiters attention for desert wont be going back to that restaurant again extremely rude.

Alfresco

I am afraid this restaurant looses some of it's charm from the fact that so many tables are crowded to-gether. So much so that it often haard to have a conversation with your partner without the noise from the next table interfering. With steaks at £17 a little more room would not be amiss. John Barnet.
