TV Tower Restaurant, Tower Praha, a.s., Mahlerovy sady 1, Prague 3, Czech Republic
Tower Praha, a.s., Mahlerovy sady 1, Prague 3, Czech Republic The TV tower is pretty cool. It stopped transmitting in 1992 and the cabins that jut out at the top have been converted into a sightseeing deck, a cafe and a restaurant. It looks a little odd - currently even more so as there are huge babies crawling up the side of the tower as part of an art installation - but does offer some truly spectacular views of Prague. I didn´t even know there were wines from the Czech Republic but they have a similar climate to Germany and produce similar sort of wines. We had a 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon which had plenty of nose but not quite as bold as you might have expected (probably erring on the side of caution. Probably wisely). I started with a Caprese and broke my own cardinal rule of not eating anything Italian when abroad. I always end up comparing and usually unfavourably. This was no exception, all I could think was that I could have bought much better ingredients and made a much better job of it at home. Mrs Mobs Seafood Soup (a thing of some importance to an Icelander) was pretty average, she had the impression the vegetables had been cooked separately for general purposes and then added later without having imbued any of the fishiness. I should have been alerted to what was to come when I wasn´t asked how I wanted my Poachers Beefsteak cooked. It was horribly overdone and quite drab and lifeless. The accompanying crocquettes were extraordinary in managing to be utterly taste neutral, only given any presence by the immense lake of cranberries they were swimming in, which was more like a jam than a sauce, horribly sweet and sticky and not complimenting what little the rest of the plate had to offer at all. The unfortunate Mrs Mob had gone for a Chefs Special Tower Salad which was a mountain of bread and lettuce, a couple of slivers of chicken and not much else. There were three separate menus for the dessert, one of which was a laminated 1970? style Wimpy menu that had Nestle emblazoned all over it just to get the liberals raging. Hmm. Liberal rage. Probably involves some serious tutting but still saying "fine thanks" when the waiter asks if everything is OK. I had something resembling a banana split. It was yellow. My God, was it yellow. Its not hugely expensive but nor are most places in Prague. Great service, great views but food which induce great sadness. Go to the cafe cabin for the views and an ice cream. Although it will probably be Nestle. Rejected |
