'El Loco', as well as being Spanish for 'locomotive', is more apt here in its' other meaning of 'mad', i.e, you'd be 'crazy' to go here. I went with my wife and we should have taken the hint as soon as we saw the empty tables. Or the encapsulated menus. But we didn't, and regretted it. The menu was scant and bizarrely, main dishes were mainly for two people only. My wife didn't want the same as me for a main (fair enough, surely), so we asked if we could have it made for one. The waitress went off to ask chef, who, in earshot (it's very quiet in an empty restaurant), said: "Well that's blackmail, isn't it". Needless to say, we did not hang around, paying for our beers and walking out with them. Shocking. If Whitstable restaurants are catering more and more to the likes of visiting Londoners used to a much higher level of service, places like this will become even emptier if they can't get the basics right, (like not perhaps insulting your customers for a start).

el loco

Yep, sadly couldn't agree more. If you are going to do the basic Mexican fare, (fajitas, enchiladas etc) at least do it competently. If you can't do it competently at least make it cheap. El Loco dished up dull tasting food to us which I would have been embarrassed to serve up on a tired Monday night at home. Needs some flair or at least some quality...I suggest the owners have a meal or two at Cafe Des Amis in Canterbury, a much better place which e should have gone to.

Oh dear

I have to say, I can't recommend the place either. The last time we went was about a year ago. We had booked a table a week earlier for a birthday meal (only for 3 people), and on arriving we were told it was full, and they didn't have our booking. We advised we had booked (we had actualy spoken to the owner/chef on the phone), so the waitress advised him of this. He reply was to shrug his shoulders and say "What do you want me to do about it?". I would have left at that point, but it was for a birthday meal, so we decided to brave it. Eventually they set up a small, cramped, table by the back door (a table not usually used) for us to eat at, and although we were pleased at the time, the rest of the meal was spent with my wife's arm being next to a scorching radiator, and having people nudge past the table to go to the toilets. The food was not impressive either. To top it all, we found they had also implemented a service charge (obviously to fleece more off the DFLs) and the prices had risen quite a bit. We didn't complain, because basically, we knew we wouldn't go back after that, or get anything off the bill. That was the last visit. It's a shame, because it used to be ok in there, the food was nice, resonably priced, and you'd see quite a few locals in. Not any more. Shame.

DFL's

Its a shame that "El Loco" cannot meet with the locals let alone the dreaded , DFL's that have kept whitstable alive for decades.. it is also a shame that the locals dont try encourage the rich merchants from London to visit more often and spend there hard earn't cash, it seems snobbery and a misguided delusion that the people of this once quaint little town are some what in a league of their own, unfortunately it would also appear that the vast majority of whitstables inhabitants are actually DFL's that have defected from the ghetto and ended up here!! which is a shame as well when you think that they paid the original house owner money only to find that the locals are in actual fact carrot crunchers that live by the sea, sucking on oysters for all to see..! i think that this little Mexican restaurant along with the OAP's that insist on driving even though they are not capable of boiling a kettle should consider calling it a day.. and perhaps another hairdressers put in it's place, because we all know how Kent women like a nice hair do, blue rinse optional, and perhaps this little town can slowly die, just like Margate and Ramsgate.. nice places to visit...but i wouldn't want to live there!! so to finish, close the over priced and under quality "El Loco" open a trendy wine bar.. this happened in London over 10 years ago.. that failed as well, then when its all ruined open a Mini cab office so the locals can get a cab to somewhere good.. like Canterbury.. :)
