The view is fantastic from this top-floor restaurant.

Not McCoys anymore

I thought it was worth saying that McCoys have now left the BALTIC. The restaurant is currently closed, but I hear that they have a good Chef lined up to take it over from December 2008.

McCoys Rooftop Restaurant, Gateshead

On Saturday 16th December 2006 I had the experience of dining at McCoys restaruant which is situated on the rooftop of the Baltic Flour Mill in Newcastle. The restaurant itself has fantastic views over the Newcastle cityscape and Milleniuim Bridge etc - this is probably the restaurants best feature. Expections were high - although the chairs looked more like patio furniture.

The menu itself is priceless - quite literally! For some bizarre reason absolutely no prices are quoted? However, they have channelled their energy into the explanations of each dish which are unbelieveable! Its like war and peace! It definately wins the award for the most long winded pretentious menu I have ever encountered. Shame that the actual dishes just didn't deliver. For my starter I ordered King Scallops of which I actually had two on my plate - I couldn't help thinking this is why the plural was used! Thinking about it 'King Scallop' would have sounded a little odd wouldn't it? The dish was overly fussy - there were too many things on the plate including 'foam' which I have to say actually unbeliveably looked like someone had spat on my plate! Seriously! It was completely hideous - what was the chef thinking? All in all the flavours did not compliment each other and the plate was an over fussed mess. Scallops have a beautiful, unique taste - the dish would have been much nicer kept simple. The main course arrived. I'd ordered venison. I received two 10p sized medalions and again a huge variety of other bits and pieces. There were three of us dining and the waitress couldn't make up her mind who was having what. Plates were put down and picked up and moved around. Serving 3 people can't possibly be that difficult? Pretty unprofessional. Again my plate was overly fussy and none of the flavours worked together. It was trying to be clever and failed dismally. Even then, the chef had managed to overcook the venison. Thats more or less impossible to do! We decided to have dessert, probably because the portions were so small we were still hungry! When this arrived I actually couldn't contain myself and acutally burst out laughing when it was placed in front of me. The big stripe of chocolate across the plate looked absolutely disgusting. If I hadn't laughed I would have cried. Oh yes, they'd served our coffees before the dessert arrived too. Nice touch!

It possibly is the most over priced, over rated restaurant I have ever been in. The food is awful, the portions are tiny and it is presented really badly. The icing on the cake is the service being particularly poor too. What a pity...I can see the potential. Top tip - get a chef who can cook and doesn't play with the food! Bon Appetite! disappointed

what a joke

If people that go into depth about their time at the baltic flower mill restaurant, did not actually have a worthwhile experience why would you take the time to write about it??? The only reason I am writing now is that i was looking for the telephone number on the internet after going a few times myself, and seeing your lengthly comments irritated me because i dont believe in my opinion that there was anything wrong with it. Too picky i would say and with respect, if you do not like this place then fair enough however could you atleast suggest some where that is better to others? thank you for your time

Baltic, Gateshead

"They're having a laugh!" ...is the phrase that springs to mind when the meal arrived. The portions were ridiculously small and dwarfed by the enourmous plates on which they were served. I ordered parma ham to start, which comprised of 1/4 slice of parma ham rolled up with a finger nail slice of black pudding. To follow I ordered the pork dish and we paid extra for a selection of vegetables between four people. I got to admit to laughing when the main courses arrived. I received three bit's of pork the size of a 10p piece accompanied with one bolied potato, four green beans and a pencil line of sauce. My over sea's vistor's were not amused as they received simillar portions. The only consistent thing about the evening was the dissapointment that followed each course. Was it a pleasant experience?..not really at £40 per head it was a rather expensive joke - the food was bland and the service was poor. It certainly did not represent good value for money and I would not recommend it to anyone. However, if you must try it please ensure you have a hearty lunch and take note McDonald's is open to late and situated on the Felling bypass just behind the Baltic!! monty

if only you understood the art of dining in fabulous restaurants

ive been to the baltic flower mill a few times, and it is pleasant and lovely you dont go there for the slap and dash meal that you expect at weatherspoons! you have an a lovely meal, yes small portions but thats the nice thing about it. when ive been, 3 courses and cheeese and coffee to end I'am very full. If you are used to tucking in then why not stick to gregs bakers! i do love a bean and sausage melt whilst walking around shopping, However. The Baltic is all about the elegancy and enjoying the art of wine and food not about filling you face coming out bloated and then heading for the nearest pint! You pay for the service and the experience, and in my experience the food was lovely. Sorry for any spelling mistakes but i was considering taking my boyfriend there after positive experiences before. Your comment annoyed me. Too many people are all about filling their face nowadays why not stay at home and feed yourself to the brim! the baltic in my opinion which isnt exactly fact, I admit, however it is a pleasant and enjoyable experience. I dont think people would choose to go there every week but for a treat it's right up my street! I didda a rhythm!!! have a great weekend
