Booked a table here last Friday for 8.30pm, we arrived early (8.05) but this was no problem as we were told it was unusually quiet. It certainly wasn't dead but there were plenty of tables available. Upon being seated we were 'napkined' up and presented with our menu's whilst also being offered the customary poppadums.

The poppadums were brought out swiftly with an array of decent dips, not the usual, which was nice. The menu is extremely varied and not full of the usual 'gravy house' options. Obviously they do the ubiquitous options but the House specials are obviously their forte.

My partner went for a Salmon Ka Tikka for starter, while I went for the Murgh Ka Sashlick. The Salmon really was excellent, well presented and tasty, it was not something I had seen before and was almost like a posh version of the British cod in batter! My skewer of meat, was again well presented and also very tasty.

For the mains my partner went for the mixed grill which was a vast array of meat brought out on a sizzling dish, provided with a naan. I went for Dum Gost (lamb cooked with chilli's, yoghurt and spices) which was suitably spicy and of good quality, served without the oily film lid that poorer establishments serve. The service throughout was good and I thought the prices were very reasonable.

They have a bar area for smoking which I thought was a nice touch and they offer a discounted take away menu. There were also adverts for entertainment that they will now be providing such as an Elvis night.

The Raj is definitely up there among the best of the Indian eateries in the town, it may not have the surroundings of Junakhi, but is nice enough, and the food is just as enjoyable. It gets a thumbs up from me.

Used to be great but eased off into ok. Meat and seafood dishes good standard and curries do have variety in taste (unlike some). vegies dont have a great selection - i wonder whether their veg is frozen rather than fresh. Genuinly friendly staff and reasonable decor. Perfectly acceptable pre-pub / post pub food although if you want something better try Junaki!

This is one of the best, in terms of food, price and service. The service is nothing but superb, all staff are exceptionally friendly. The food is top class and for reasonable prices. It certainly leaves you wanting to go back for more. by grandguy

This place came highly recommended from a number of sources, and having been utterly disappointed with all Indian food TWells so far had to offer, I was looking forward to this. The restaurant itself had a few families in, and we were greeted by friendly staff as soon as we came in. Having settled on a takeaway I chose a lamb dopiaza, and my partner had a chicken rogon josh - we always feel that if they can get the basic, bloggo dishes right, we'll try them on more adventurous dishes next time - sadly, there won't be a next time here. Raj clearly uses stock sauces - the rogon josh was an unappetizing grey colour under the cheery tomato red of the top - my partner reported it being bland, greasy and absolute rubbish. The dopiaza had very little meat in, and what there was, was tough and chewy. It was also bland and far too greasy. A mushroom dopiaza was a tasteless, greasy sludge although the chicken pakoras were better than expected. The portion sizes for both main courses were very poor - barely half a tub. All in all, very disappointed and wouldn't bother again. Surely there must be SOMEWHERE you can get a decent curry in this town! The Pink Princess
