Strictly speaking, this isn't a restaurant review. We found this to be an excellent meeting place when we were here last year, and used it a few times this year too. It's right in the centre of Vancouver, the foyer is huge, with armchairs and newspapers to read, you don't have to explain yourself or buy anything, nobody bothers you. While waiting to meet someone, you can buy postcards, stamps and souveniers in one of the small shops inside the hotel, then sit and write your postcards and mail them in the ancient brass letterbox. The restrooms are clean, spacious and free, just the thing for changing clothes if you need to. If your date still hasn't turned up, you can use one of the payphones to find out what happened. You can get food here if you want. Plonk yourself down in one of the armchairs in the Lobby Bar and they bring you a generous tray of free savoury nibbles before taking your order. I had some cocktail with a devilish name, L had a beer. Other people were having hefty and decent looking sandwiches, but we had a table booked elsewhere. Our two drinks came to about $15 (Canadian dollars are worth about 45p so about 7 quid) Every city has a place like this, or should have. I imagine the rooms to be crisp, clean, downy comfort and very expensive - the place has a gym, a jacuzzi and sundeck and patio so it's hardly going to be budget. But you can also spend a useful couple of hours there without spending a bean! Recommended. 28th July 2000 DM
