Kaga, 580 Glenhuntly Road, Elsternwick VIC 3185 Australia
580 Glenhuntly Road, Elsternwick VIC 3185 Australia 039523 0984 Japanese food is far cheaper in Australia, and I'm not sure why. The ingredients are as easy to find (in London, anyway). I suspect it's a staff issue - so many more Aussies of Japanese origin who know how to prepare and serve Japanese food. And now that the Japanese government has abandoned its plan to certify Japanese restaurants abroad, to ensure they are serving authentic cuisine, they need not fear the Nippon Food Police creeping up behind them with a clipboard. Kaga was S's idea, and he asked if he could order for all five of us. Would you let a teenager order your dinner for you ? S is 14 and just back from 5 weeks in China (he's been studying Mandarin at school for the past 3 years) Nervously, we agreed, and you know what - the boy done good ! Little dumplings to start, then a big wooden boat (about 15 inches long) laden with sushi and sashimi arrived, along with steamed rice. We were still a bit hungry, so ordered the special which had caught L's eye - soft shell crab sushi - fresh and delicious. The adults shared a bottle of ridiculously inexpensive fizz. I should mention that the larger tables require you to remove your shoes, sit on cushions and tuck your feet under the table. I think S enjoyed getting us to do all this, the little rotter. He also regaled us with tales of things he had eaten in China - the story of the dog's testicle which he threw up five minutes later was particularly enchanting.
