We've been to Cafe Blu on and off for a few years now, and always particularly enjoyed the wine selection. The owners seemed to travel and collect wines from various parts, and at not unreasonable prices. More recently, the owners appear to have changed and I did hear that the Cafe Blu in Windsor was up for sale - perhaps changes were afoot.

The net effect of this seems to be the death of the adhoc wine selection, and a return to a fairly standard wine list, but you can't have everything. We sat down to what turned out to be a very reasonable but simple meal, with fish cakes and the Blu Burger very obviously the result of reasonable quality ingredients, and a skilled chef. All the flavours were there, and all credit to the kitchen.

However, the changes have caused problems with service to surface. Notably, our wine selection of a 96 Chablis, at quite significant expense, was brought to the table already uncorked (a pet hate), but worse - it had morphed into a 2005 Chablis. We explained the problem and the waitress left the table to fetch the correct bottle. Like the wine, however, our waitress had morphed into a more senior, blonder, more bangled version, who tried to tell us it was "the same wine", then when that failed told us it was the "other girls fault", and when I stood my ground and said I didn't want it, stomped off with some aplomb.

That was the last we saw of them till the end of the meal, when the bill arrived. Feeling a little uncomfortable with the passive aggressive stance being taken by our new (bangled) waitress (including performing the whole card operation with her back to us at the end of the table), we wanted to get straight out, but woe of woes we noticed the unwanted opened bottle of wine had been added to the bill. I went to the till to ask for a refund, received a positive but unwelcoming noise from the waitress and she later appeared back at the table with the cash. Trouble is of course they had also added service including the wine, and that wasn't corrected. I asked for a refund on the card, rather than the cash, and at the point of the waitress seeming to explode, the owner who had been sitting quietly nearby stepped in.

They refunded the wine, refunded service and apologised. A welcome gesture, but there was no nod to the failures in service such as the wine being presented open and causing the problem in the first place, or the surly service experience. So, given their new waiting staff and hostile experience we won't return - a shame since we were regular diners there. Good food, no longer good service.

Ian.
