This looked like the perfect place for Sunday Brunch. We looked at our watches and Lo! it was Sunday. Co-incidences like this should not be resisted. Jewish cuisine has never really flourished in London outside the East End, and perhaps Solly's provides a clue as to why this might be - they keep up. There were free samples of their vegetarian Chopped Liver, and the wide variety of Bagels shows constant revision of the menu. Among traditional staples like Lox and Cream Cheese and Pickled Herring, there was the Eggel (bagel, scrambled egg, cheese melt on top) roasted vegetables, pastrami - something for everyone. I went for the Lox and Cream Cheese anyway, which came with a huge piece of sweet pickled herring and loads of capers nestling under the excellent salmon. Mind you, in Canada all the salmon is excellent. L's Eggel was as described, but the egg had been scrambled in a microwave, the only less than perfect note. Coffee is the Seattle's Best brand and comes in paper cups, I had a Cinnamon Bun which L tasted and didn't like, but I loved it. Solly's is popular, there are polite little notices asking you not to stay at a table for more than 30 minutes so that others "can sit down and enjoy a nosh" We'll be back. 23rd July 2000 Approved DM
