I came here on Thursday evening last week with a friend. When we arrived the dining area was empty, although both bar areas were relatively busy and a table of four people, who appeared to be regulars, arrived about 20 minutes after us. I wasn't the person who wrote the original review on Spy although I had been here before. It had now changed hands and I noted a couple of changes. Firstly, they now served take away fish and chips which I found strange for a public house and perhaps offputting to some, and they had done out the dining area in a nautical theme, this was quite apt given that they now specialise in fish.

If you ever look at the Restaurant Spy messageboard (see top of home page for a link) you will be acquainted with a quantity called Mark White. He helpfully suggested Fred’s chippy when I was looking for one in Littlehampton in November. Well, I finally took him up on his suggestion during a bitterly cold March Easter.

‘Situated by the banks of the picturesque River Arun,’ says Fred’s website, ‘in the old town of Littlehampton in West Sussex, Fred’s Fish and Chip Shop is a traditional family owned English Fish and Chip shop… Fish and Chip Shop of the Year for 2002 and in SIX previous years, Fred’s has been serving high quality fish and chips for two generations.’

This is a take away first and foremost with a few tables in the adjacent room. I had Loukanika, which apparently are Greek sausages marinaded in red wine with (surprisingly good) chips, salad and pitta bread. The 10% service charge is odd given the type of restaurant it is but I couldn't really begrudge them. Slightly more alarmingly, there is only about 3 foot headroom in the toilet and the taps don't work. OK King Mob

A typical experience of trying to find a decent lunch in middle England. Food revolution in the UK??? Obviously not in the South Midlands. Why is it that when travelling in mainland Europe, most little towns will have somewhere decent and clean to pop in to for a quick tasty bite at lunch-time. Not in this country though. So here I am, hungry, and in darkest Nuneaton(don't ask!)on a grey October Wednesday at 12.30. Where to eat? Big problem. Wandered the greasy, chewing gum splattered streets. Marks and Spencer maybe-no Cafe Revive. Then on to a little old fashioned Debenhams store. Went in to the ''restaurant'' and swiftly turned on my heels. It was full of the ''grey and fawn brigade'' getting excited about toasted tea cakes, and micro waved ''baked potatoes'' filled with indeterminable sludges. Other eating options were of the formica topped table variety of cafe, with miserable punters staring out of the steamy windows on to the street, while stuffing baked beans and chips in to their obese pasty faces.

I have made numerous visits to this Fish & Chip shop, and I can tell you that it is truly amazing food. I haven't eaten cod for years as the quality has been so low it is not worth eating, but all that changed when I tried Sea Master's cod and chips. The fish was beautiful, succulent, moist and of very generous portion. The chips too I would go as far as to say were the best I have ever had. I am not just making a song and dance for nothing, I have eaten in some of Londons top restaurants, but food at this reasonable price is incredible. The food doesn't stop there either.

Just off the A30 at Goss Moor lies the best excuse I know of (if your're not a surfer) to go to Newquay. Over the last few years Mrs Wildfrank and I along with my two entrancing daughters have whizzed past a brown sign on the motorway saying 'Port and Starboard Fish and Chips' and have never even thought about popping in, until a shortbreak holiday brought us past that sign one more time. As soon as we walked in we were welcomed by a wonderful lady from Lancashire who made us feel totally at ease and escorted us to a table whilst the wildfrank nostrils were alerted to the wonderful smells emanating from the kitchen.
