Dim t , Tunbridge Wells, Kent

This August Bank Holiday Monday found us in the Tunbridge Wells branch of Dim T, which is located at the top end of Tunbridge Wells (the non touristy bit) and is yet another bank conversion.

Gilgamesh - Camden Market, London

It’s hard to describe Gilgamesh in Camden because the restaurant is unlike any other I’ve been to, anywhere, I‘m talking about the décor here, not the food, which I’ll come to.

Satay House, 13 Sale Place, Paddington, London W2 1PX

We went here towards the end of Malaysia Week 08, which the Satay House had contributed to, and they were rushed off their feet. The place was completely full when we went, so it was lucky we had reserved a table. Satay House is a bit of a Malaysian institution. It is very much a family business ......

Ginger

425 West 5th Avenue, Anchorage AK 99501

Walking around Anchorage, we stumbled upon Ginger, were very impressed with the menu of Pacific Rim cuisine so decided to have dinner there. Had we actually asked anyone, they would have said “Yes, but book a table, it’s Saturday night and this is an incredibly popular restaurant.” So, in all innocence, we strolled in at 7.30 and got the very last table. Everyone who came after us was turned away.

They claim to be the farthest North Thai food restaurant in the world, and they probably are. We’d been told before we arrived in Fairbanks that for some unknown reason there were several Thai restaurants here. This did not seem remarkable, there are Thai restaurants in every major city. When we got here, it gradually dawned that Thai restaurants are the only “ethnic” restaurants in Fairbanks. I’m not counting generic “Italian” pizza and pasta places, of course, which are now really American food.

Wagamama, Chapelfields, Norwich

Wagamama, Chapelfields, Norwich

408 Chapelfield Plain, Chapelfield, NR2 1SZ

Norwich on Saturdays is busy, as is any city of comparable size. So I can only assume that this is what accounted for the severe lack of decent service displayed to me at Wagamama in Norwich.

With a Japanese 'healthy eating' ethos, Wagamama is set out in a canteen/refectory style. Waiting staff take your order and scribble numbers on your paper placemat, I suppose to remind them of who's having what, as the tables have no numbers and orders are electronically delivered to the kitchen via a handheld device.

Went down to the Satay Restaurant in Brixton, Sarf London as they say down there. To be honest I wasn't really looking forward to going down there but I have some friends who live South of the River and felt more obliged than willing. Anyhoo, I can honestly say I really enjoyed myself.

Yes Brixton has it's bad points, but this restaurant (that that had a cocktail bar in it too) was a real welcome surprise to me. First impressions were outside with this big banksy type stencil of a Thai dancer beckoning you in and some flyposting which is actually the menu. Inside the stencil artwork carries on through with this massive sort of montage on the back wall of Asian buildings. Looked quite good I thought.

We went here on a Thursday night without a reservation (it got very busy later so book a table to avoid disappointment). It is a Nepalese restaurant serving authentic Nepalese food and is linked to the award winning Gurkha kitchen in Oxted (I have visited this and its again very good). The layout of the restaurant is well thought out and the tables well spaced. We were given appetizers whilst we chose our food and plenty of time to choose from the extensive menu. There is a choice between spicy dishes and non spicy with the ratings clearly marked on the menu. There was a range of dishes to choose from, so something for everyone. The food arrived quickly and was gorgeous! Just the right portion sizes and beautifully presented. I had slow cooked lamb which was succulent and tender. A three course meal for two with a glass of wine each costs about £45-£50 which I think is very good value for money considering the quality to the food. Definitely recommended and I will be visiting again. Littlelou16

Preedee Thai, 155-157 Camden Rd, Tunbridge Wells, TN1 2RF

155-157 Camden Rd, Tunbridge Wells, TN1 2RF

A new restaurant in town is always a bonus - an opportunity to try something different. With Preedee Thai though, the stakes were much higher as they replaced a friendly, familiar and much loved Filippo's - an Italian restaurant and takeaway that boasted the best pizzas in town.

So, it was with not a little trepidation that I chanced upon a takeaway there last week. From a fairly extensive, some would say too extensive, menu, I chose a Yum Nua - a steak and chilli salad with rice. Pleasingly assured it would take about twenty minutes, I settled down with a bottle of beer. After six minutes (I counted them) it was ready.....

Nusa Dua, 11/12 Dean St Soho, London W1D 3RP

11/12 Dean St Soho, London W1D 3RP

I have often gone past this place, seen that it is full, and ended up somewhere else. Having now been I can see why it is always full and discovered that there is a downstairs section as well. So it it not always as full as it seems - if you see what I mean. It deals in Pan Asian cuisine and is quite, quite excellent. I had Thai, Malaysian and Vietnamese dishes and there were probably other countries represented as well. My three were wonderful - fresh zingy flavours, good portions, reasonable prices. House wine was excellent, service unobtrusive and professional. The decor downstairs is worth a mention too. Bright red exotic fish and several turtles swim about. Not only this but there are several almost life size wooden ladies dotted around the place striking strange Pan Asian poses and finally, when I went, a superb beautifully painted dragon-type figure which may have been wood or possibly paper mache. Whatever it was, it was almost worth the visit just to see it. All this and at the top end of Dean St. I will be back. Harry
