I booked the Maffei some months in advance, as part of a trip to Verona to celebrate my wife’s birthday. The online booking system worked well and the web site gave a lot of information with regards to menus, wines and historic location.

The restaurant premises are quite spectacular, being housed in a magnificent palatial building. We were greeted by very friendly staff and shown to our table, as well as ourselves, there was only one other couple in the restaurant, despite this being 9pm on a Friday night. I confess that the alarm bells did start to ring.

Review:
(1) Very cool place with great food. We ate in the pizzeria as we turned up without a reservation and would have had to wait some time for the restaurant. It appears to be a newish operation in a building that is very Italian 1930s. The place was really busy with local beautiful people rather than tourists. It is everything that Conran dreams of. Each of the starters were very fresh but basic and the pizzas were yummy (and big). We also had a bottle of wine and a bottle of water. The bill was about £26 in total. Dave and dolly bird.

Right plump fat in the middle of Piazza Bra we could not get a table for love nor money on a Saturday night in Verona. "Forty minutes" barked the doorman. On a Sunday - on a gorgeous, brisk Spring afternoon - we managed to experience Olivo al fresco. Sandwiched in between an English family on hols and what appeared to be a hilarious "Merrie Melodies" match of a fat would-be opera singer in a brilliant yellow coat and a bald small man on the other side, Q and I struggled with the hilariously arranged menu.

Monument tired and walk weary found us down a tiny street near the museum in Verona. Our mission - get away from the tourist highways and the rough guide recommendations and find ourselves an honest to goodness Italian "trat". We found it here and cursed ourselves that we weren't able to go back. A welcome as cheery as you might expect, we were shoe-horned into a corner and immediately given two slices of "house special" bruschetta.

We ate here twice, because we were so hungry the first time we ordered very quickly, and did not look at the whole menu. While enjoying our starter of sottolio, (olives, mushrooms, artichokes and sundried tomatoes in olive oil) we saw all this lovely looking fried fish and deep fried courgette flowers stuffed with cream cheese on their way to other tables. Bugger. But our pizzas were first class - and of course Madam has to have the Tiramisu, doesn't she? "well this is the home of Tiramisu, isn't it?" Yes, and it was fine, but honestly no better than the average London version.

It was hot, we sat outside, pleasant, very quick service, very reasonable prices. We each had a salad, I had Caprese - tomato, basil, mozarella, L had Lido: fresh tuna, lettuce, onion, mozarella. Good bread and oil, beer and espresso. After slogging round the Pantheon, The Forum and the outside of St Peters and the Colliseum, this was exactly what we needed to restore us. It wasn't till we got up that we realised we were right next to a place recommended to us by a friend - Insalata Ricca - which we tried a few days later.

Without doubt the best place for eating in Rio, acknowledged as such by the locals, and if you make a reservation you can book one of the few tables outside overlooking the harbour. This is particularly spectacular in the evening as the sun goes down. After your meal you can take a long lingering stroll around the harbour and sit dipping your feet in the dark cool waters of the Med by the light of the moon.

Austere and up the hill in the centre of Bellagio, Bilachus is clearly the upmarket restaurant in this pretty town on Lake Como. A thundering drizzly downpour - you know the ones with really wet rain - shoved us inside and pining for a seat. My beef in tomato and vodka (honest) sauce was scrummy and delicious, Q's grilled "trout of the river" (his explanation not ours) was succulent and fresh and the green salad crisp and beautifully dressed.

It felt like we were intruding on something. We had pounded around the centre of Verona for ages on a Sunday night looking for that hideaway culinary gem and then just got darned fed up. We listed into the Liston - just behind the main Piazza Bra - and pretty quickly regretted it. We waited for ages to be seated by a bad-tempered staff, obviously overwhelmed by the shock of the business on a Spring Sunday evening.

- I strongly recommend you come here for the pasta and fish dishes, and described by an Italian I was with as "molto chic ma non e caro'.

- Start with the fresh mozzarella and riccota with baked aubergines. Great salads with a very decent and repectable olive oil in generous bottles at every table.

- I had the most delicious saltimbocca I have ever had in Italy here.

- You will need at least 3 hours over your meal especially if you are with a group.

We arrived back in Rome very late, having been out in the country all day, and were about to despair of finding anywhere still open when L spotted this place, and we agreed to go there whatever it was like. In fact it wasn't bad, but they were so incredibly busy it was quite comical. We shared a seafood salad: the waiter slowed down slightly as he whizzed past the buffet, slung some of the salad on a plate and skidded by our table skillfully landing it between us without ever actually stopping.

This was recommended at the B&B where we stayed. Strange yellow satin napery, but comfortable and clean enough. L started with risotto marinara, I had ravioli stuffed with ricotta and spinach - both good. We shared a second course of turbot, which was very fresh and taken off the bone for us at our table, accompanied by spinach. The food quality was excellent, but the service was showy (many flourishes while de-boning the fish on a side table) but indifferent, and we were kept waiting quite a lot, although the restarant was not crowded.

Probably the most cynical place we went to in Verona, this Pizzeria clearly exists to exploit tourists. Bruschetta watery and unimaginative, steak slightly old and cheaper than other establishments, penne arrabiatta with little trace of anything other than a light coating of chilli oil and, yet again, no Italian Beer. Why are the Italians in this part of the country so ashamed of the beauties of Moretti and Peroni? Our waiter explained that the Italian Beer in these parts was the wine…….

Review:
Monument tired and walk weary found us down a tiny street near the museum in Verona. Our mission - get away from the tourist highways and the rough guide recommendations and find ourselves an honest to goodness Italian "trat". We found it here and cursed ourselves that we weren't able to go back. A welcome as cheery as you might expect, we were shoe-horned into a corner and immediately given two slices of "house special" bruschetta.
