Centro Commercial Gilao, Av.Dr Mateus Teixeira de Azevedo, Loja 6,8800-379 TAVIRA Forget celeb chefs, drizzles, liquid nitrogen foams and food stacks, traditional food still exists, thank goodness in many places in Portugal. Tavira is a "real" town on a river in the Eastern Algarve. An old fishing port(tuna) where the local cuisine reflects the riches of the Atlantic. This restaurant which has been there forever is run by Joao Pereira and his little team of cooks(yes lady cooks -not poncy chefs) who you can see frying and boiling and grilling in the tiny kitchen area. 1 de maio, Rua de Atalaia 8 Bairro Alto Lisbon, PortugalRua de Atalaia 8 Bairro Alto Lisbon, Portugal A high proportion of our fellow diners appeared to be French in this small and crowded restaurant. We started with a mixed salad (huge) then we each had a massive serving of our chosen fish. Trouble is, I can't remember the name of my fish, and once again L and I discussed the fortune to be made by the first person to produce a multi-national food dictionary. You'd have columns for each country, so: hake (UK) = garoupa (PORT) = grouper (US) = merluza (ESP) etc. |
