In the heart of the old diamond district, where there are more frummers per square yard than even Stamford Hill, we were the only customers in modern dress, and I was the only female. The food is all cooked on the premises and (obviously) all kosher. You make a selection from an impressive array at the counter, Hoffy piles your plate high, heats it up and brings it to you. Meanwhile, you sit down and tuck into hrine (horseradish and beetroot dip) and harissa (chili, tomato. sour cream dip) new green pickles and brown bread.

A pleasant enough little brasserie where you can get a croque monsieur if you're feeling boring or one of the combination salads if a little more adventurous. There doesn't seem to be any rules as to what goes in; strawberries, ham and pickles, with a creamy dressing all lumped in together. Bizarre but tasty. Approved King Mob 2000

From Hollywood's golden age, to arctic exploration, baseball to cricket, the decor is meant to be all-embracing to reflect the eclectic menu. No specific style to speak of, it includes dishes from all over Europe and beyond, most of which looked pretty good. A wide variety of contemporary music in the background and staying open until 2am make it mostly a young people place but all the better for it.

If you want to eat well in Brussels, come here. The bill came to about £30 a head for 3 courses and a good bottle of wine, which was criminally undercharging (they even do a lunchtime 2 course special for about £6). I can't emphasise enough how good this was. The duck fillets to start were gorgeous, the creme brulee was a deliciously rich treat. But the turbot main course was something really special, probably the best piece of fish I've ever had.

Charleroi is not a pretty town; think Blade Runner and Robocop. But take a left from outside the station and you avoid most of the town and get to see the various slag heaps and factories pouring tons of evil looking smoke into the air. You will also find this little gem of an Italian restaurant. Great service, really friendly and attentive. All the dishes are big, look beautiful and taste even better.

In the Little Italy district, just behind La Grand Place, there are plenty of sea food restaurants in the tight winding alleys, this is a particularly fine one. Very fresh ingredients, plenty of variety and a good wine list. Look out for the mixed sea food grill which is spectacular. Expensive but worth it. Approved King Mob 2000
