ServiceSignor Franco's, 5a, High St Tunbridge Wells Kent TN1 1UL
5a, High St Tunbridge Wells Kent TN1 1UL Signor Franco's is rather much an institution in Tunbridge Wells, with a reputation to suit and having lived in this hallowed town for so long and not sampled their culinery delights was quite simply unacceptable. So on a delightful Monday evening we decided to pay them a visit and to say they live up to their repution would be a safe statement to make. Even initial contact was a pleasure, with the booking procedure being nothing but a pleasant experience with a polite friendly person on the other end. My flatmate and I were greeted well and promptly taken to our table which had wonderful views of tunbridge wells and had a wonderful ambience to the whole establishment. Oriental Palace, 38 Mount Ephraim, Tunbridge Wells, TN4 8AU
38 Mount Ephraim, Tunbridge Wells, TN4 8AU If you were to give me a choice I would not go to a Chinese Restaurant. I’m not entirely sure if it was my first experience, going to my “girlfriend” Barbara Muir’s birthday party as a ten year old at the Hong Kong in Dundee or not. I was a dead cert for the Chicken Maryland, but Barbara’s dad Jim insisted I try the sweet and sour pork. Sour? Where was the bloody sour? It was sweet, sweet, sweet, sticky, gooey, violent infra-red gloop surrounding a bit of pig. It was so horrible I didn’t eat anything remotely Chinese until I was in my twenties. Even then it was a backdoor through. I fell in love with Korean food – bitter Kim Chee and barbecued Bul Gogi - a heavenly combination with noodles and sticky rice. Korean through to Thai, Indonesian, subtle Vietnamese and finally to fiery Szechuan and ceremoniously dumped on the door of Cantonese. La Becasse, 17 Corve Street, Ludlow, Shropshire, SY8 1DA
17 Corve Street, Ludlow, Shropshire, SY8 1DA 14 Feb 2008 On arrival we called to check the parking arrangements and located free parking behind the restaurant - great start :o) We were shown to a lovely room with old wood panelling, to a perfectly laid table near the window. Crisp white linen, rose pink glass chargers set the scene for a lovely Valentine's Day lunch with our friends Robin and Michele. We opted for the Gourmand Menu @ £55 although we were very tempted by the eight course Valentine's Menu with champagne @ £65. It was possible to opt for the Menu Du Jour at £24 for 3 courses. It was explained to us that exchanging one or two of the items in the menu was perfectly acceptable. Our service was impeccable all the way through the meal. We were waited on discreetly yet shown great attention when it was required. The food was a beautifully presented work of art, tasted amazing and was delivered with the correct timing for a leisurely lunch with friends. Recommends from our meal are: Winter artichoke salad - was a delight, the quails egg and fried risotto balls were a perfect delicate balance with the flavour of the artichoke. Crab risotto with champagne foam was a great hit too. Lovely texture and flavour. Parmesan crusted scallop with curried vegetable and parsnip crisp was wonderful in contrasting taste and texture. Venison steak with beetroot and juniper berry jus, blackcurrant, chestnut and a brussel sprout was enjoyed by all. Cheese option @ £9 supplement is very extensive and served from a wonderful wood and glass display brought to the table. The aroma was tempting. Selecting 4 cheeses with the expert guidance of the waiter was a pleasure. His knowledge was extensive about taste and texture and location. Served with fine crisp wafers in a choice of flavours, the desserts were out of this world - presentation made it all the more desirable. Coffee served with a supply of delicious chocolates brought our meal to a successful end. Mooli - Nepalese Restaurant, 57 - 59 Calverley Road Tunbridge Wells Kent TN1 2UY
57 - 59 Calverley Road Tunbridge Wells Kent TN1 2UY We went here on a Thursday night without a reservation (it got very busy later so book a table to avoid disappointment). It is a Nepalese restaurant serving authentic Nepalese food and is linked to the award winning Gurkha kitchen in Oxted (I have visited this and its again very good). The layout of the restaurant is well thought out and the tables well spaced. We were given appetizers whilst we chose our food and plenty of time to choose from the extensive menu. There is a choice between spicy dishes and non spicy with the ratings clearly marked on the menu. There was a range of dishes to choose from, so something for everyone. The food arrived quickly and was gorgeous! Just the right portion sizes and beautifully presented. I had slow cooked lamb which was succulent and tender. A three course meal for two with a glass of wine each costs about £45-£50 which I think is very good value for money considering the quality to the food. Definitely recommended and I will be visiting again. I had the grilled sea bass, with sauteed potatoes, which tasted fantastic, and the creamed leeks/creamed spring onions (I couldn't work out which) set it off perfectly. If you like seafood - visiting here is a must. There must have been 10 fresh fish dishes on the menu, ranging from sea bass, to barramundi, and crab. Non-fish included the usual steak fare, coq-au-vin, a number of vegetarian options. The place is very well decorated with a very rustic feel. Au Tout Petit, 4, rue d'Amphoux, 84000 Avignon, France
4, rue d'Amphoux, 84000 Avignon We didn't book, and they were full when we arrived, so with regret we walked away. But the man ran after us and said come back in five minutes and we'll have a table for you. We did, and they did ! I had La Trilogie autour des champignons d’automne en poêlée, soupe et glace (cèpes) which was a pungent mushroom soup, a bowl of sauteed wild mushrooms with - I think - marjoram, and ... mushroom ice cream! It all comes together on a tray, and oddly enough, it works. L had trout with almonds, mushrooms (it's that time of year), mange tout and barley, which he really enjoyed. |
