Large GroupsThe Vincent Rooms, The Victoria Centre, Vincent Square, London, SW1P 2PD
The Victoria Centre, Vincent Square, London, SW1P 2PD This was the first time I’d ever eaten in a restaurant that describes itself as ‘a laboratory’. The Vincent rooms is/are part of Westminster Kingsway College, a place where diners act as willing guinea pigs for student chefs and waiters. Now, when I go to the dentist I prefer to see a person who has been fully trained and has a few years’ experience under his or her belt. But food is different and I thought it might be nice to visit this place and check out the ever-changing menu of excellent sounding food, devised by the student chefs. After all, that Jamie Oliver fellow was trained here. Simply Italian, 15-18 East Parade, Hastings, TN34 3AL
15-18 East Parade, Hastings, TN34 3AL Bracing winds and intermittent rain lash the seafront at Hastings on an in-between-Christmas-and-New-Year family excursion. The crushing disappointment that the fairground rides are closed and the increasingly desperate and ultimately fruitless search for an open fish and chip shop led us to this Italian bistro on the East Parade. We piled into a booth, kids warned to avoid the expensive chef's specials - there's seven of us for chrissakes - and a variety of pizza and pasta appeared much as we expected. My middle son kept asking for his four cheese pizza to come without mushrooms, but, you guessed it, it did. Some discussion about the desserts on the blackboard was negated because "no sir - they're all off". The Ewe and Lamb, 26 Maytham Road, Rolvenden Layne, Kent TN17 4NP
26 Maytham Road, Rolvenden Layne, Kent TN17 4NP A traditional and very pleasant free house which does a superb Sunday carvery as well as classic English and French dishes (so their business card says). Myself and some fellow ramblers all enjoyed our food, I opted for the pork which was cooked to perfection. Others chose the beef which also went down well. Portions are generous and the accompanying leak dish complemented the meat very well. Food prices are reasonable but a pint of coke will set you back a staggering £3 which is excessive by anyone's standards hence the ££££ rating. My dessert was chocolate fudge cake which was delicious, highly recommended. By the time we left the pub was full which is always a good sign. Overall I was impressed although be prepared for high soft drinks prices! The Who Lahore Kebab House, 2 Umberstone Street (off Commercial Rd) London E1 1PY
2 Umberstone Street (off Commercial Rd) London E1 1PY Whitechapel is full of "Indian" restaurants, and 90% of them are run by Bangla Deshis. Nothing wrong with that, but Lahore gives the impression of being truly Indian, and the menu certainly has few of those run of the mill staples we all know and love. The clientele was 90% male and a wonderful ethnic mix, I guess most of them worked at the nearby London and Barts hospitals. We were seated quickly, every table gets a salad and raita straight away (excellent) There's also a bottle of Hildon water on each table, but if you check the menu it's £2 (not excellent at all) We asked for a jug of tap water and got one - no fuss. Alisan, The Junction, Engineers Way, Wembley HA9 0EG
Alisan, The Junction, Engineers Way, Wembley HA9 0EG Had some fantastic cocktails and a delicious meal at the new Alisan chinese restaurant near the new Wembley stadium. On arrival the place is a little daunting and characterless due to it's size but it has a lively atmosphere (probably due to the 2 for 1 cocktails we had with the Dim Sum snacks!) A good tip is to go for the set menus - it's saves a lot of reading of the extensive menu!! The veggies amongst us can highly recommend the veg set menu - a big thumbs up! Preedee Thai, 155-157 Camden Rd, Tunbridge Wells, TN1 2RF155-157 Camden Rd, Tunbridge Wells, TN1 2RF A new restaurant in town is always a bonus - an opportunity to try something different. With Preedee Thai though, the stakes were much higher as they replaced a friendly, familiar and much loved Filippo's - an Italian restaurant and takeaway that boasted the best pizzas in town. So, it was with not a little trepidation that I chanced upon a takeaway there last week. From a fairly extensive, some would say too extensive, menu, I chose a Yum Nua - a steak and chilli salad with rice. Pleasingly assured it would take about twenty minutes, I settled down with a bottle of beer. After six minutes (I counted them) it was ready.....
