The blokes are work are keen for a feed for Friday lunches and this place does not disappoint them. They have been raving about it for a while so today I went along to put the nosebag on. Not many other places can you get a homestyle breakfast any time of the day for £4, with a full plate the size of a small island.

Captain Old Timer and his sidekick The Bunnyman certainly polished it all off. I enjoyed my macaroni cheese, but my chips weren't tasty enough to entice me to overeat. Great milkshakes too! Captain Old Timer is a bit of a regular, on top of the breakfast, he also recommends the burgers and sausage butties. The cake selection was impressive, so we might need a re-visit for coffee and cake.

Went here as a second choice but was pleasantly surprised. Quite a basic box room layout to the place but the nice conservatory and outside tables break the place up a bit. The menu had a good selection of Italian dishes with enough variance from the traditional to make it refreshingly different. I had a bit of a treat for the wine and chose a very nice 2001 Barolo. For starters I had Antipasto Misto which had a very nice dolop of Buffalo Mozzarella on it, she had Gamberoni (thank god I kept the receipt) which was King prawns cooked in garlic, chili and a touch of wine I believe.

I like seafood. There, I've admitted it. I know oysters are said to be like eating snot off a tortoise but I disagree. As to their aphrodisiac properties, I think that's a myth, though a friend once warned me that if you don't swallow quick enough they make your neck go stiff.

Anyway, we noticed Riddle & Finns Champagne & Oyster Bar, which has recently opened in a narrow passageway in Brighton's Lanes, just off North Street. There's a bar outside to the left of the door, where you can eat if you like to be jostled by fatties squeezing down the passageway. The kitchen is long and thin and visible through the window, which stretches along the front of the bar I just mentioned. This is greatly reassuring, since you can see what the chefs are up to and do your own impromptu environmental health review. In the window on the right of the door is a superb display of fresh fish: a work of art.

Fantastic buffet. You choose off the normal menu and can have as much as you want!
All the food is freshly cooked and for only £12 per head its fantastic.
You are not all crammed in, the decor is okay and you sit at proper tables. The drinks are reasonably priced also.

Greenwich has long needed some food reviews to put it on the map. Yes, I know it is already on the map but in terms of restaurants it might well have said ‘Here be Dragons’. Well that has changed over the past three or four years so I plan to eat my way through Greenwich and leave a trail of reviews.

The first is for the Rivington Bar & Grill. It is owned and run by the same people as Le Caprice and The Ivy, but being Greenwich lacks or distains some of the pretentiousness. The replaced old pub shares the same site as the new independent picture house. Both are a warm welcome to Greenwich. The Rivington has bundles of light, a long bar for snacks and drinks and enough napery on its intimate tables to keep a small hotel going; and the foods not bad either. It is a very British menu, Lancashire suckling pig with quince sauce, or Barnsley pork chops you know the kind of thing. If you want a nice starter try the modern version of the scotch egg – it’s a ducks egg, perfectly cooked and has soft runny yoke inside. The service is friendly and attentive. The wine list broad, and runs from the cheaper end to the more expensive, the bread on the table was warm and the butter cold - as it should be. There were problems when I went back on the Sunday for their excellent breakfast (although if they told me there was a problem with the kitchen there would have been less hurumphing from my table). All in all a very welcome addition to Greenwich – oh and Faye Maschler loved it too.

Oh you have to be so careful when choosing a name for your restaurant; it can so easily become a hostage to fortune. It was obviously considered quite a witty name for a restaurant/bar serving fusion food, but the joke soon wears thin. We hadn’t booked and they were full, so we agreed to sit and wait for a table. After about 20 minutes one became free, we got the menu and ordered some drinks. About 5 minutes after we’d ordered our food, the waiter came back and said the monkfish was sold out, so L ordered something else. After another 5 minutes the waiter came back and said, no, the monkfish was on again. So we sat and waited.
