Badger Lane, Woolley Moor, Derbyshire DE55 6FG

The White Horse Inn at Woolley Moor near Alfreton has celebrity pictures of Gary Lineker, Frank Bruno and the like adorning its walls. The occasional award also litters the walls - Derbyshire food pub of the year 1998 for example - but food here is secondary to the vast pub garden out the back, eons of space for running with a children's playground backing on to a football field. Our junior agents were able to lose themselves while we struggled with the drinks and food - impossible preposterous plate-fulls of standard english "grub".

The Castle Hotel is a fabulous find and a place that we couldn't help returning to the next night. Huge portions of well-cooked food at very reasonable prices (about £5-£6) and a steady menu of British favourites like steak pie, gammon, etc. Service is young, enthusiastic and keen - even asking if you want another drink brought to your table. An absolute gem that we can't recommend highly enough.

'Excellent food served in a warm friendly atmosphere'. Well, that's stretching things a bit. We were travelling back from Carsington Reservoir and were all peckish. J from the Beeb spotted a blackboard as we sped past. 'Did that say' 'FULL AGAIN'? he asked. He turned the car in a cow pat filled gateway and we drove back. 'FULL MENU,' said the board, but the typography left much to be desired. We were greeted in silence by the boss (Jay and Sue run this pub according to their card) and went and sat down in the restauranty bit.
