Arriving 15 minutes later than our booked time, is always a good test of the management. However the owner, hovering in the busy bar warmly welcomed us and said no problem despite an almost full restaurant.

Wide range of beers at this freehouse but the wine list is not enormous but a good selection. Mostly around £10, represented good value. [Although we didn't try it, we noted that they had good Champagne- Lanson- priced at around £25 compared to supermarket price of around £20. I regard that as good value] Bar staff and waitress very smiley and helpful.

Lesley's on the Hill, 39 Steep Hill, Lincoln LN2 1LU

39 Steep Hill, Lincoln LN2 1LU

Steep hill it most certainly is. Lincoln cathedral should be part of the national curriculum. It's an essay in fantastic craftmanship, care and attention to detail, awe inspiring scale and all that stuff. you can keep your Gherkin and your Telecom Tower. Anyway, when we staggered out with our necks still cricked from looking up at the vauilting and stained glass we wanted TEA! Lesley's on the Hill is a small tea shop with lumpy ancient old walls, dark wood panelling, white table cloths and all that.

Tates Fish Restaurant, 4-6, New St, Boston, Lincolnshire PE21 6LP

Boston (the British one) is not overflowing with grade A restaurants but Tate's is a pretty good sit-down fish and chippery. What do you want from a fish and chip shop? I reckon you need (1) Piping hot FRESHly fried chips (not those leathery dark brown twice-fried things that you find in the worst chippies, (2) Good snowy-white fish (cod now becoming extinct because of overfishing. Go for something else), (3) Sensible portions: a mountain of chips and a piece of fish that hangs over the side does not add to the quality of the meal, (4) sauce bottles without gunge on the nozzles or bottle tops (NO SACHETS, PLEASE!), (5) decent quality ketchup, sauce, vinegar (not that aesthetically displeasing turpslike liquid christened, probably by some vinegar accountant a long time ago, 'Sarson's non-brewed condiment, (6) clean, (chequered) tablecloths, napkins, plates, cutlery, floors, waiters, (7) cheerful, helpful staff, (8) easy availability of pickled eggs, ghherkins and good-quality onions, (9) savaloys that have a slightly crisp skin, (10) a good, bustling atmosphere.
