Manor Road, Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, KT12 2PF "We promised ourselves we wouldn't do this" said Q. We had ducked off the M25 on the way back from a short break, the rain had cancelled out everybody's sunny smiles and a traffic jam in front had made it pretty necessary to head off and into deepest, darkest Surrey for a beer and a sandwich. And here was I navigating aimlessly down what seemed to be a suburban road trying to find "a pub that's by the river". "Look there's a place called Riverhouse, that's bound to be by the river". It wasn't, but a short trundle afterwards found us facing a bunch of thirty swans, looking menacing or hungry - I couldn't work out which - at the river standing beside a pub called The Swan. Bouncers probably. The Edmund Tylney, 30–34 High Street, Leatherhead, Surrey, KT22 8AW
30–34 High Street, Leatherhead, Surrey, KT22 8AW I had the unfortunate experience of eating at the Wetherspoons in Leatherhead recently. While the prices were typically inexpensive, the food and the service can only be described as cheap. I first started to feel uneasy when, after ordering, my food arrived at my chosen table before I did. There is a not-so-fine line between quick service and reheating a cold dish. Not wanting to add to the rather awkward atmosphere that this created, I accepted the meal. After realising that ‘dilapidated’ is actually an adjective one can use in conjunction with ‘jacket potato’, I pushed my food around my plate for a while and reasoned that it was too cheap to complain about, besides, the whole meal cost what the free glass of wine costs in some bars.
Cloisters Restaurant at Nutfield Priory, Nutfield Rd, Nutfield, Redhill, Surrey RH1 4ELNutfield Rd Nutfield Redhill Surrey RH1 4EL The faux-gothic arches that stand impressively over the eating area in Cloisters Restaurant harken back only a hundred and fifty years or so, although you could be forgiven that the Hunchback of Notre Dame himself could come swinging in your window past the dripping rain-sodden gargoyles as you break your bread. There's something quite eerie about eating in a churchy place, whispering in hushed tones, drinking copious top quality wine, but, hey, it's alright - its communion. The Crown, The Green, Petworth Rd. Chiddingfold, Surrey GU8 4TXThe Green, Petworth Rd. Chiddingfold, Surrey GU8 4TX Chiddingfold is a picture postcard Surrey village and the Crown is on the village green opposite the church. It is well old, dating from 1285 when monks or pilgrims or maybe both would stop over on their way to Canterbury. Good Queen Bess is reputed to have whetted her whistle as a guest here and one of the ancient Edwards also pulled in for a few, leaving his retinue camped out on the village green. We also put up for the night and it was one of the nicest inns I have ever stayed at, very well and intelligently run with the customers' needs much at heart. The rooms are full of period character but have all the modern fixtures - TV, tea and coffee, trouser press (how did they manage whithout those in the middle ages?) etc. The bed was four poster but comfortably modern, the bath looked Victorian and the wardrobe seemed to be hacked from ancient oak. Wonderful - an entertaining characterful mixture. 1860, 28, South End, Croydon, Surrey CR0 1DN28, South End, Croydon, Surrey CR0 1DN I have to say that the food is simply out of this world. The owners explain it as Authentic South African Indian Food from Durban. The food is light and fresh, not oily and loaded with cream or yoghurt. The flavours are exceptional. I enjoyed the chicken livers peri peri as a starter and my husband loved the cheese n sweetcorn samoosas whilst the kids were well pleased with the naanies chips which we were told is a recipe passed down from the chefs granny hence nans chips. La Tasca, 52a, High St, Kingston Upon Thames, Surrey KT1 1HN52a, High St, Kingston Upon Thames, Surrey KT1 1HN Staff are mostly spanish which creates a great atmosphere. Extensive menu options, not expensive. Good freshly cooked food Need to sort out the heating in the colder months though. Viva 2006
