YorkshireSheesh Mahal Restaurant, 346-348, Kirkstall Rd, Leeds, LS4 2DS
346-348, Kirkstall Rd, Leeds, LS4 2DS London, for me, is overrated when it comes to curries. I think anyone who says they've eaten a decent curry in London, well, probably hasn't ever been anywhere else. Particularly north of the Watford Gap. Anyway, fortunately (as we do love our curries) we moved away from the big smoke to the smaller smoke of Leeds six months ago. And the Sheesh Mahal is our local curryhouse. And how lucky are we? Very. They've cleverly situated both these restaurants in quite posh residential areas, so there's not too many students raucously coming in at 11pm - in fact I don't ever recall that happening. And if you have had a drink you don't feel too guilty getting a cab. Anthony's, 19 Boar Lane, Leeds, LS1 6EA
19 Boar Lane, Leeds, LS1 6EA The other night we celebrated me not being that ill from pneumonia by going out for dinner at Anthony's in Leeds. We've been meaning to go for quite a while, since trying other restaurants which had been recommended by word of mouth to us which were frigging awful. This place, our 'social network' had told us, was not worth going to. So I enthusiastically booked it. We're also enthusiastic converts to 'molecular gastronomy', aka foam. El Bulli allegedly started this off - the World's number one restaurant. And as I learned from the web, chefs at Anthony's were trained at El Bulli. Mana Greek, 10 St Sampson Square, York
10 St Sampson Square ,York We visited the restuarant on Saturday the 23rd June 2007. We ordered the vegetarian meze however queried why this included fish!?. We were told that something be done excluding the fish. The first dishes arrived which included a sausage dish!. We were served a selection of greek dips with pitta bread and a cheese pie which was cooked from frozen because it was still frozen at the centre. The next dishes arrived which consisted of a plate each of stuffed vegetables not the lots of little dishes that you would expect a meze to consist of. A greek salad was served with some of the most salty unrecognisable cheese. It should have been feta but it was vile. This was challenged with the waiter who simply shrugged and walked away. I paid the bill "under protest". Overall I found the staff to be unhelpful , dismissive and the food represented poor value for money. I asked to speak to the owner but simply ignored. So rather than spoil my evening any further we left. Cafe Guru, 6 Brewery Place, Brewery Wharf, Leeds, LS1 O1N
6 Brewery Place, Brewery Wharf, Leeds, LS1 O1N The best restaurant I've visited all year - absolutely stunning, almost space age interiors, impeccable service & exceptional food. I know it is good because my husband is notoriously difficult to please (he's an architect, aka perfectionist!) & he was over the moon with Cafe Guru as the choice for his 40th birthday celebration. The restaurant coped admirably with our large (and probably quite noisy at times) group of 18. Everyone, without exception, vegetarians & meat eaters alike were very impressed with their food. I can personally recommend the Tandoori King Prawns (Starter) and the pan-fried leg of lamb (main course)...we were too full for dessert but coffees were served even though we had overun our booking time on the table. Heartily recommend this place - can't wait to go back! The Last Raj, Chapel Allerton, Leeds, YorkshireChapel Allerton, Leeds, Yorkshire * Great - friendly service and fab. food * Cosy atmosphere * Good standard inexpensive Curry House * Try the Raj Special * Outside of the City Centre, but worth the trip! El Lobo Betty's, 6-8 St Helena's Square, York, Yorkshire6-8 St Helena's Square, York, Yorkshire Not just tea rooms, but restaurants. They also sell a huge range of the best coffees and teas, imported directly by them, plus they make their own breads, cakes, biscuits, chocolates, preserves, etc. (We buy all our coffees and teas from them--- Sumatran Mandheling coffee is ideal for after meals-- rich, smooth and almost chocolatey. Ceylon Orange Pekoe or Tippy Assam are the teas to drink at tea-time.) Around 1900, "Frederick Belmont, a young Swiss confectioner, arrived in London and, unable to speak a word of English, boarded the wrong train at the wrong station and found himself in the depths of Yorkshire. In 1919, he opened his first Café Tea Rooms in Harrogate, where the unique combination of Yorkshire and continental specialities...quickly brought Betty's popular acclaim." It's still "in the family". No-one knows who Betty was---there are lots of theories. During the Second War, Betty's catered for many service-men, especially Canadian, Australian and New Zealanders. There is a large mirror with about 600 of their signatures scratched on it. If you want to know what real, traditional fish and chips is, try it here. Also, if you want to know about real English cream teas, eat one here (but do not complain, as we heard two Americans do, that the butter and cream are bad for health). The menus are a mix of traditional Yorkshire and Swiss---superb. Yorkshire rarebit (with tomato or apple chutney), rösti or mushroom pancakes with cheese are excellent. Of course, they have a wide range of freshly brewed coffees or teas, plus good Samuel Smith's beers, homemade juices, etc. The one weakness is their wine list, which is also strongly Swiss influenced, and does not suit us. Excellent service. Good pianist in St Helen's Square 1800-2100 daily. It is a beautiful place designed by the interior designers of The Queen Mary liner, with huge plate-glass windows. Little Betty's is in a 16th century building. They don't take bookings, so you might have to queue at busy periods. The Golden Cock Inn, 2, The Village, Farnley Tyas, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire HD4 6UD2, The Village, Farnley Tyas, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire HD4 6UD I ordered quiche and chips for £7-95. The chips were dry and the quiche was rubbery. I dont mind being served up mediocre food when i pay £4 for pub grub, but if your paying £8 for something as simple as quiche and chips you may expect to get something at least half decent. I complained politely but was told firmly by the bar manager that the food was good quaility and no one else had complained about his food. |
