Montana Wines, Brancott Winery, Marlborough New Zealand

The people we were with had always wanted to eat here, so had booked a table for the four of us. Montana is trying to emulate the swish wineries of Napa Valley, and the restaurant certainly looked promising. Three of us chose hot smoked salmon with noodles; G went for the beef burger. L had his eye on that, but old habits die hard and even in BSE free New Zealand he couldn't bring himself to order minced beef.

This barn like building - called Seamart Trio - is a restaurant, a bar and bistro and a fish wholesalers. It's cavernous inside, with a vast woodfired oven along half of one wall. Although it's the size of Quaglinos and could easily seat 200 people, there were very few other customers. The waitress was a tall, slim, pretty thing, who seemed overawed by the size of the place. Each time she meandered up to us, she had to decide from which side to approach our table.
