Emmet Square, Clonakilty, County Cork, Ireland

Clonakilty is an Irish town in County Cork. It was home to Michael Collins, who lived in Emmet Square with his sister for a time, and since 1785 there has been a rather agreeable hotel here. We were staying for a bit and ate every night in the restaurant. The service was hit and miss: an accomplished head waiter, a charming Molly Malone-type waitress, a large smiley guiness-filled lady, and a frowning, lemon-faced young Germanic misery who bore a striking resemblance in many ways to Eva Braun.

Have eaten here quite a few times, at the weekend and during the week. On a Saturday night you would have to book but they can usually fit you in. The earlier you go, the less crowded it is. I had for starter suppli - breaded rice and melted cheese deep fried with a salad. N had the same. He went for a Don special pizza which for £7 had every topping you could think of and it was a 12"!! I had tagatelle which was a huge meal.

I love meat and make no apologies for it. The fresh Wicklow lamb here was an almost mystical experience, absolutely beautiful. To start I had a very fine mushroom soup and finished with a sublime cheesecake with Baileys sauce but it was the lamb that really made me thank God I'm not vegetarian. The whole three-course meal with a couple of bottles of wine came to about £30 a head, which was good value in my book.
