Signor Franco's is rather much an institution in Tunbridge Wells, with a reputation to suit and having lived in this hallowed town for so long and not sampled their culinery delights was quite simply unacceptable.

So on a delightful Monday evening we decided to pay them a visit and to say they live up to their repution would be a safe statement to make.

Even initial contact was a pleasure, with the booking procedure being nothing but a pleasant experience with a polite friendly person on the other end. My flatmate and I were greeted well and promptly taken to our table which had wonderful views of tunbridge wells and had a wonderful ambience to the whole establishment.

We have passed this pub many times over the years and simply passed by. In fact I believe it had been shut and empty for a number of years. Driving passed we noticed the cars parked outside and decided to give the place a try - thank goodness we did!

Inside is fresh and full of character. Carpets here, wooden flooring there, old beams and a mix and match of antique furniture.

And the food was superb. The other half had Herefordshire rare breed pork belly and I could resist the wild boar and venison sausages. From the compliments coming from the other tables we weren't the only ones enjoying their food.

After a pleasant evening walk along the Darent Valley Path we arrived at the Two Brewers in Shoreham looking forward to a nice evening meal. Little did we know we were in for the meal from hell...

Three quarters of an hour after ordering, our food finally arrived. My chicken curry was bland, very bland and quite tasteless. True this isn't a curry house but I've had far better pub curries in the past which ACTUALLY HAD FLAVOUR IN THEM. That was just the start of our problems.

The Beacon, Tea Garden Lane, Rusthall, Tunbridge Wells, Kent

Tea Garden Lane, Rusthall, Tunbridge Wells, Kent

It was a gorgeous sunny April Sunday and the place was filled with large family groups, although I came for lunch for two, with just my friend. The young waiter - who looked like a jobbing actor to me - was very pleasant and smiled and didn't crowd us, and seemed to know what good service was all about. A printed menu of the day took the place of the old blackboard - and included bar favourites such as sandwiches, as well as more substantial mains including Sunday Roast beef. After ordering a £14 bottle of Chardonnay (not great, but at least they provided us with a bucket to keep it cold, without asking) we went straight for the mains. Mine - Sea bass on a bed of mussel chowder - was excellent. The fish was cooked just right and the creamy chowder to dip it in was very tasty. Yum. My friend's dish - smoked chicken salad was really boring looking - and tasting - by comparison. The chunks of smoked chicken were just thrown on some green leaves - it just didn't have any great taste or balance about it, and he looked over at my plate enviously. To end the meal, the sticky toffee pudding with ice cream was indeed sticky and very moreish - I only had a couple of spoons of it as I'm watching my waistline, but my friend had no complaints and licked his lips. The mint tea turned out to be a pot of tea made with a teabag - would have been nice to have some fresh mint tea but it's not a big complaint. The Beacon is great for the views and the atmosphere, but it seems as though the food is still a bit hit or miss. My hope is it is leaning more towards hit most of the time. I glanced at the children's plates sitting at the table next to us - and their fish and chips served on trendy rectangle plates looked incredibly appetising and non-greasy with big chunky home-made looking chips. I think this remains a good place to go with a family but I think the consistency of the dishes needs to be given more attention. I will probably go again sometime, but I will order with care and steer clear of the salads.

We've been to Cafe Blu on and off for a few years now, and always particularly enjoyed the wine selection. The owners seemed to travel and collect wines from various parts, and at not unreasonable prices. More recently, the owners appear to have changed and I did hear that the Cafe Blu in Windsor was up for sale - perhaps changes were afoot.

The net effect of this seems to be the death of the adhoc wine selection, and a return to a fairly standard wine list, but you can't have everything. We sat down to what turned out to be a very reasonable but simple meal, with fish cakes and the Blu Burger very obviously the result of reasonable quality ingredients, and a skilled chef. All the flavours were there, and all credit to the kitchen.

4 friends and I had the most most incredible Sunday Roast at this restaurant. Not only did the Maitre 'D manage to accomodate us at the very last minute he made us feel completely at home. It's a hidden gem right in the centre of London and cost wise it's excellent value for money. We must have had at least a whole chicken in the middle of the table that we could all tuck into at our leisure. It was the most succulent Sunday Roast served with a mixture of fresh, locally sourced vegetables that were oozing with flavour and there was plenty for everyone. Service was swift and professional and our waiter helped us choose an excellent wine from their extensive list. Both food and ambiance a real treat.
