This
Public House and Hotel is situated in a perfect position by the Medway,
with outside seating overlooking the ancient bridge, lock gates and weir.
Our visit was on a warm, September lunchtime in 2003. On approaching the
pub, perhaps the ashtrays nailed to the tables and complete lack of any
shade should have acted as a warning to us. My experience of eating in pubs
for the first time is that is best to select something simple on the basis
that even the most inept cook can probably succeed. The Anchor failed. In
this case my wife ordered a Ham Sandwich and I selected a Cheese Ploughman’s.
Both verged on the disgusting, in fact I did not think there were any Public
Houses left where such substandard food could be produced. The ham sandwich
was made of very stale bread and very off putting discoloured ham. Apart
from a freshly baked piece of bread and some tasteless, factory produced
cheese, the ploughman’s lunch had none of the normal ingredients one would
expect. There was no pickled onion, some Branston type pickle was supplied
in a miniscule sachet, from which I managed to extract about half a teaspoon
of the condiment. Some Coleslaw salad was provided, but this was of such
substandard quality, that it was uneatable. Definitely one to avoid. Top
