The
Black Horse in Pembury is a deceptively large pub on the High Street in
this pretty village just outside Tunbridge Wells. It clearly has high expectations
of both its menu and clientele, and the range of food on offer is pretty
impressive. They take obvious pride in their seafood dishes - a seafood
plate costs way over Twenty pounds and so, with this in mind, Q bravely
plumped for a paella which came in gargantuan portions - a massive heaving
plate of rice, prawns, mussels and slightly chewy squid. While enjoying
it at the time, Q did not enjoy the subsequent and lingering aftertaste.
As seafood can sometimes give me a little trouble (don't ask - I blame the
genes). I preferred the steakburger - a huge patty of juicy hacked steak
on a crusty bun - which came marvellously with fried (or were they roasted?)
onions, a shovel-full of spicy hand-cut chips and a generous salad. Marvellous.
The staff seem to know their regulars, so service to strangers was polite
if a little abrupt - a little cheeriness would not go amiss. A top quality
pub with an impressive menu that perhaps shouldn't take itself so seriously.
