Cold,
wet, and fed up with Christmas shopping on the last Saturday of November,
we were in need of some warmth, good cheer and a quick lunch. As the coffers
were now almost empty a budget price would help. The road to Southborough
was against the traffic from Tunbridge Wells which seemed like as good a
reason as any to dine at the Harvester. The welcome was warm and cheerful,
and we were quickly shown to a table and drinks were promptly provided.
We ordered fillet steak and chips twice, which, this being a Harvester,
included a trip to the proverbial “Salad Cart.” We were asked how we wanted
the steak cooked and chose it well done. Perhaps we deserved what we got.
We selected our salad. Always with some trepidation, how many people sneezed
or coughed over it before I did? We ate our salad, we drank our drinks,
no steak. A gentle reminder to the pleasant serving lad, elicited the response
that it was taking a while as we wanted it “well done.” Come on, the Blue
Anchor in Crowborough can do a half a leg of lamb in 10 minutes! Well, eventually
the steaks arrived and by God were they were well done. I think the delay
was caused by the journey time from Tunbridge Wells Crematorium. In fairness
the chips, peas and tomato were fine, the Salad was OK and the less well
done bits of the steak were tasty if a bit dry; my doctor would have been
pleased at the exercise the chewing provided. We didn’t bother with desert
or coffee, as time was short. All up the bill was a shade over £20, including
the drinks, plus tip, not too bad for two, I’ve spent more on worse. Top
