The one match I never
got to see at the Euro Championships 2004 was the match between
Portugal and England. Q and I had long tried to make arrangements
to see friends of ours - I hasten to say not football fans - with
one or the other of us cancelling or trying to re-arrange. Finally
we had managed to get everybody together and, as I had heard that
the Mount Edgcumbe had recently changed over to a Malaysian menu,
had decided to give it a shot.
The Mount Edgcumbe has
crushingly gorgeous views over the Common in Tunbridge Wells and
at the back is a cave where you can sit in semi-darkness with your
beer illuminated by a crop of candles. Because of the interest elsewhere
there were sod all people in the bar/restaurant that night, and
the barman's remark that we could have the starter at that table,
then your main course in the cave, with the dessert outside, rang
creepily true. I'm sure that readers will be delighted to know that
the food at the Mount Edgcumbe is a great success. We plumped for
a starter platter with satay, sesame toast, ribs etc with an additional
portion of potato pastries - fun, ideal and just about right as
we all ploughed in. Main courses were shared too - beef rendang,
Singapore noodles, chicken and prawns, solidly rather than majestically
cooked, hot to the table with friendly and attentive service. Portions
are slightly on the small size and some of the pricing appears a
bit bizaare, but the advice from the waitress pretty much ensured
that we didn't overorder. Drinks are bar prices so that ensures
that you can have a pint, tasty expensive bottled beer, wine or
soft drinks. Solid, cheery and we'll be back. M
